Our Shi-Tzu is 12 years old. He has always been excellent with his house training. The past 6 months or so, he began drinking a lot of water and having accidents in the house. We took him to the vet who treated him for a bladder infection although a blood test came back negative.

After using up all the meds we had for him, nothing changed. So, my wife took him back to the vet again this morning. After xrays and a urine sample, everything came back normal. The vet thinks he might just have dementia and just thinks he needs to drink a lot of water. I'm wondering if maybe he has kidney disease? Any ideas?

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

The excess water drinking is always almost linked to Diabetes. Very common in old dogs and separate from doggy dementia (which is also common in old dogs).

Once the insulin is managed, the excess drinking and peeing goes away. If not blindness usually occurs fairly soon.

Not calling your vet a quack....but.I've been down this road a couple times now.

what calvin said. Quit giving your dog a corn or rice based dog feed. That will help a bunch.

That was my first thought too that he was diabetic. The vet says he's definitely not diabetic after his blood test.
His eyesight is not good; he has cataracts.

This! Wife has a cat that she give 2 shots a day for diabetes. Been giving it shots for over 6 years, it’s now 17 old and doing great.

my dog 14 year old GSD started drinking a lot, spending nights outside because she didn't want to come in , then started loosing control would be laying there and pee on herself in the living room

panting and breathing hard at times

then quit eating and dropped 12 pounds in a week

it was time wife put her down while I was at deer camp or I was coming home to do it

I think a lot of vets don't be strait with people and if your dog is really that old tell you if you think it is time it is time.

they benefit money wise to repeated visits and many are fairly extreme in their views of how much you should do to keep a dog alive.

I find it bizarre to take a dog or cat to the vet.

My daughters dog had secures. The vet gave her so meds. Still had them! Got on computer and found out some dog food for secures. Now her dog might have one every 9 months. Before, every 2 days!! Do, some research, you might can find a figure it out!

Look up Cushings disease. Excessive thirst and urination.

Why? It isn't like you are down in the Ozarks with 75 hounds that you don't care about once they stop being useful. (unless they trespass their way into a 220) These are people's pets, and sometimes the closest thing they have to children. Most of us love our dogs enough to have someone who knows his stuff check them out from time to time.

I did, I think you got it right. He has just about every symptom listed. It sound like a very extensive regimen of treatment to stabilize the condition. Not sure at his age if it's worth it.

Mark K, you are correct. We have two dogs and they are like our children. Thanks for your kind words.

Our Jack Russell is somewhere around 14-15. He started doing the same thing. Wife switched from canned and/or dry food to making it herself. She cooks up rice with either salmon or burger in it and adds frozen vegetables. Makes a big pot of it and stores it in the fridge. We feed him smaller amounts 3-4 times a day. Completely cleared up the urination and over-drinking.

She told our Vet the recipe and he said it is perfect for an older dog. It comes out to be a small fraction of what we were paying for some of the "science-based diets" we were feeding him.

I find it more bizarre if someone does not. Out side barn cats nope, but inside cats and dogs go when needed.

We do a lot ourselves with live stock. But it will go to the vet when needed. I have no problems putting things down when called for.

That's a pretty dumb comment. I take my dog to the vet if it's something I can't doctor myself. I do my own staples, worming, shots, snakebites, infections, etc. but sometimes you need a vet. I wasn't skilled enough to remove a tumor my dog had... should I have shot a dog I could sell today for 2 grand instead of paying the vet $200? Yeah, that makes sense.

Both of these, only one I have a problem with is not taking to a vet. Cattle and 3 GSD's vets here a lot. Take care of your animals and they will take care of you. Good luck, hope you have more time with your animal.
