Excuse me, but this could use some explanation. I recall 4 wheel drive vehicles in the 1980's getting 8-12 mpg. Today, even with all sorts of emmission controls they can easily double that.

Many vehicles from the late 80s and 90s got better mileage than vehicles of the same type today. Had a ford escort 5speed that could do 41mpg highway , 90s geo metro could get over 50mpg - a hybrid Prius can't get that.
