Can someone explain to me why we export so much oil and why we continue to do it ? I did see that Texas finds it cheaper to export it to Mexico than move through out the US.

I understand not all oil is the same. Reading it I saw where our oil we export was 38% that could be used for gasoline.

Tar sand oil from Canada very expensive to produce and not a good quality for gas its thick and heavy. Most of the oil use for gas production is very light and light crude, not all areas produce this type of oil. Unfortunately a lot comes out of the middle east and Russia also there production cost are much lower so we bought a lot of it.

Goes to the high bidder I expect. Oil can not sit still, it has to move.

I appreciate those who tried to explain it. The purpose of my thread was not really a question as it was being informative. Most do not know the answer I expect. Letting you know that again like covid you can thank our fine government for screwing the people.

As Danvee says not all oils are the same. That problem is compounded by the fact that our refineries are so old that they don't have the technical capacity to be very flexible in the types and grades that they can refine.

Consequently we export the stuff we can't use and import stuff we can.

Here is just a partial list of some of the different types/grades that are produced throughout the world. Scroll about halfway down the page and click on the + sign for an description of each grade.

Just for your information, Texas does not export crude oil to Mexico.
We export refined petroleum products and natural gas to Mexico.

You are correct. We export refined petroleum products to Mexico ie gasoline. Gasoline is 38% of the oil we export. My point being that we are exporting gasoline that could be used in the US .It is not a matter of we do not have enough gasoline. We are selling refined petroleum to other countries at 802,000 barrels a day.

Again, as I have said in other post the oil business is not what it seems very complicated system and the oil companies are in business to make money. The oil companies have no allegiance to the USA none what so ever. Im not so sure if Russia wanted oil from us or North Korea they would sell it if legal. As far as trade that is not legal its is done through a 3rd or even 4th party country so it is legal.

Don't worry y'all. I'm running around Texas as fast as I can and hitting the "ON" switches on all these Texas oil rigs which have been OFF for about 18 months.
It's a big state and they are everywhere. Gonna take me just a minute.

I've been seeing some old wells drilled back in the 40's that played out then started up again with water flood and then played out again. With high oil I guess the small guy figures a stripper that makes a barrel or 2 a day is worth while. One of them told me the rust from the pipe falls down and is bothersome without pulling the pipe and going again. We had a small producer a few years ago that pumped his own wells himself and got hung up in the belts of a pump and got killed.

Also "net exports of oil" include plastics and other products made from oil.
