Hello,I have a Ruger American chambered in .308 Winchester with a vortex scope. I really like it, but ammo is actually starting to show up somewhat regularly and I want to really "dial it in". I have been shooting Winchester power points in 150 & 180 grain. I'm getting "ok" groups, but I think I can do better. Handloading isn't really an option, so what factory ammo do you use? I only hunt whitetails. Thanks in advance for your help.

X2 on the American whitetail. Maybe give winchester deer season xp a try, they are different than power points.

Make sure its not you shooting "ok" groups first. Go shooting with a buddy. One you know can shoot. Let him fire a few. That ammo ought to be within a tea cup saucer at 300 yards.

Wally World has been having some 308 in stock. I saw some 270 ammo yesterday $41 for 20 rounds. Not quite plinking price for me yet!

Federal Blue Box 150's have done very well for me. Powder Valley had them about a month ago for $21 a box.

Experiment with different brands of ammo but I wouldn't expect sub MOA accuracy out of that package.

I have nothing clever to put here.

A friend of mine always liked PMC ammo in his rifles and claimed they were a bit faster than many other factory ammo loads ?

What is Ok groups by your definitions? How are you shooting those groups ie. off a solid bench with bags or propped against a truck hood? Also every rifle has different preferences so you will have to try a variety of different loads to find which one your rifle likes the best. Also we tend to get wrapped around the axle chasing groups in a deer rifle. If you are getting 1 inch groups at 100 that should translate to 4 inch groups at 400 so more than adequate for deer hunting. Also for a benchmark get a box of Federal Gold Medal match 168 gr loads and try those groups that is kind of the benchmark load for establishing accuracy with factory ammo in 308 obviously it is not a hunting round. It just gives a good picture of the rifles potential

The match ammo shoots great but like K9 said, it isn’t for hunting. Love my 308.

Looks like he needs another year;-)

my 308 really likes federal power shock, and thankfully its the cheaper ammo. winchester ammo never gave me good grouping

Without reloading your only choice is to try as many different brands as you can find.

Then when you find one that suits you, lay in a lifetime supply.

Maybe 2 lifetime supply.

If it's a fairly new rifle, the barrel may not be broken in yet. I've had several rifles that improved accuracy after a few hundred rounds and multiple cleanings. If you try some other ammo, after a few hundred rounds you may want to try the Winchester Power Points again. They may shoot better after the barrel is worn in a little bit.

What I've always done with new rifles is to buy a box of each commonly available ammo. Shoot groups until I am convinced which one shoots the best and buy a case of that lot number.

the good news is Midway has a bunch of 308 options right now , order several and see what it likes

you might try the Norma white tail it really isn't expensive any more and it is good brass to save for reloading if you ever go that way.

when you find that one , yeah buy 2 lifetimes of it
