Is it true how durable they are? My ‘07 Silverado is looking like it’s going to need an engine after 270k miles and owning it for 11years. I’m looking for a low dollar(in today’s market lol) pickup that will last a long time. Found a Toyota that had 185,000 miles for sale. wondering how long I could reasonably expect it go with proper maintenance before needing something major? Figured I knew who put a lot of miles on trucks...trappers.

My '02 Tacoma is just shy of 293k. Other than general maintenance or normal wear items like belts, and an ingnition coil pack or two, it has been foolproof.
I did have to replace a driveshaft and some ball joints a year or two ago. Other than that, just gas tires, oil, bulbs, belts, and batteries.
I can't say about the newer models... Never needed a newer one.

Derek I had a 2000 Tacoma with 365,000 miles before I totaled it on a deer. Wheel bearings and a alternator were the only things outside of normal maintenance (oil changes, spark plugs, etc) I had to do on it.

... sorry, no experience with the tundras... I’ve put a couple tacomas through helll with little to no maintenance and had no trouble other than u-joints ate up with dirt and grit sand ... but I’d imagine the tundra would go a good bit further than a silveraydo when it comes to motor and tranny

Thanks for the responses, and the motor replacement is still on my list of possibilities, I’ve been happy with my chev, biggest repair on it other than wheel bearings, and a cv shaft, has been the bcm.
Trying to decide if I want a Chevy with a new or rebuilt motor and original transmission at 270,000 miles
Or this Toyota at 185,000 miles with probably the original engine and transmission.
Gambling either way I guess. I hate spending money lol.
Thanks again for the info

I have a 2010 Tundra 2wd, and it has served me well for the past ten years. I bought it used 2 years old with 36,000 on it. Now it has 253,000 on it and it runs great. Mine has the 4.6 v8. The only real problem I've had was the A/C went out on it this year. I had the condenser, compressor and some A/C valve replaced.
Now you want to talk about an amazing Toyota, I have a 2000 Tacoma 4x4 five speed manual transmission. The engine has not been overhauled. Valve cover gaskets were replaced twice and the rear main seal was replaced. It goes through a quart of oil at about 2,000 miles. It currently has 721,000+ miles on it. It's still running great.

Price is $10.5k, this discussion may be pointless and I’ll call tomorrow and the thing is sold anyway. Seems like a good deal but then again it’s more than fixing my truck will cost. Yeah you’re right about gas. I have a 28 mile drive one way to work everyday, I need a dang yugo or something.

I just sold a 2000 Tacoma with the 3.4 v6 in it with 400,000 on it. Never touched the motor or tranny in that truck other than to change fluids, replaced the alternator once, timing belt three times (routine maintenance, never broke) spark plugs a few times (routine maintenance) and had one fuel injector go bad I had to replace ($50). I did break a ball joint in it and replaced them all at that time, and a few u-joints and cv boots. It was used hard, hound hunted out of since it was brand new, trapped out of, and spent a lot of time with a fourwheeler or snowmobile trailer behind it, probably over half those miles was pulling a trailer. I rolled it once, clear over and back onto its wheels, over a bank in about 3 feet of snow with a trailer behind me, dinged it up some but never even broke a window or mirror (was only going about 5 miles an hour, polished ice and unstudded tires) cut some trees out to make a trail down to an atv trail about a hundred yards down the hill, let the tires down to about 8 psi so it would crawl up on the snow and drove it down and out the atv trail. Suspension is a weak point in Toyotas, I put a lift and heavy duty springs on it, I've replaced leaf springs on every Toyota I have owned for any length of time with heavy duty ones (broke them on multiple trucks) and coil springs on the front end of the newer Tacomas. I've owned three 22re Toyotas I've put over 350,000 on and a 22r thats odometer quit at 350,000. Only one I've ever had to rebuild the motor on is an 89 I currently own and it is kind of a lemon, bought at auction with 130,000 on it, looked to have never been off the blacktop, like new except it had been rearended and I put a flatbed on it. Spun a rod at 150,000 and when I tore into it I could see someone had already been in the motor. Blew a head gasket at 180,000 (I learned you should always use OEM headgaskets when replacing them on Toyotas) and then the new timing chain broke while going down the road at 210,000. I've got another motor sitting here to put in it when it warms up.
My dad bought the 2000 from me, because his 05 that he bought new started running on three cylinders (it is a four cylinder) at 428,000. Before that he had put two alternators and a coil on it, done nothing else to the motor other than change oil regularly and it still had the original clutch! (I've replaced a few clutches, but consider them a wear part like brakes and tires, usually get close to 200,000 on a clutch).
I've not owned a Tundra but several friends have, not sure which year they switched to the bigger Tundras, but the smaller ones got a lot better fuel mileage. I've a friend though that is on his third big one, he had a small one and two larger Tundras before this one, all were gotten rid of between 330,000 and 380,000. He sold his small one to a friend for a farm truck and it is still running with 430,000 on it last I knew. Those were all original motors and trannys.
Change the oil regular and they will run forever.

You will pay dearly for a toyota now! Ain't that the truth. Last two I've bought have been wrecked, an 89 and an 09. And they want a lot for them even wrecked.

02 Tundra 4X4 with the V 8. 265000 miles on it and no complaints so far other then the push button 4X4 makes a clunk when pops out of 4 wheel drive. Preferred the Tacoma for trapping but couldn't pass up the deal on this. It does like it's gas though.

Paul, That 2000 have the 3.4 in it? I used to think the 22re was a great motor, but I've seen enough out of those 3.4l to say they are hard to beat for reliability and longevity. Not the greatest on fuel, but what you spend on fuel you save on repairs. Yes, it has the 3.4 six cylinder.
