Anyone have a suggestion for a reasonably priced baseplate compass? $50 range.

I have a suunto mc2g and a cammenga military issue lensatic. Would go suunto with no mirror but the price of those is a bit out of hand currently.

Looking for a backup for map use with no sighting mirror. Thought about the silva explorer pro but don't think it's made in Sweden, no chinese compass for me.

A few years ago my suggestion would be the suunto mc2g global. They were $60 now $95. That's a bit much imo.

Pete,

Are the silvas sold here made in Sweden again? I bough a ranger when johnson outdoors had the U.S. rights to the silva name. Got a 1/4" bubble the second year I had it.

I picked up a few of that brand several years back because I recognized it from scouts. Had plans on teaching the family land navigating. You know figured it may be useful to find a stash of supplys say catched in the nati I navigating forest, and moving cross country with out being seen. I think they are still in the package in my reloading room at my other house.

I haven't bought any in a few years I was doing scouts last time I bought several around 2010

looking at the new manual it says made with Swedish steel needles and I see no place it says made in Sweden so I would expect they outsourced the construction

they do carry a 5 year warreanty but I have not used it

I do have one with a bubble from 2010 purchase , it spent years in my van in the heat I expect that caused it

I have a Silva Ranger from the late 1960's that says made in Sweden on the bottom and another from the mid 1990's that says made in Finland.

But I think these days they are all made in China

I have four or five Silva Explorers bought in the late 90's or early 2000's. All say "Made in Finland" on them. I think White17 is right, they are all made in China now.

One of mine developed a bubble after a few years of use. The rest are fine.

Eh...wot?

My Silva Ranger must be 50 years old. Has a bubble. Always thought it was in there to use as a level.

Did some checking today. White, you are correct, all silvas made in china now. I guess it's between suunto and brunton now. Brunton is made here, have only 1 year warranty and have heard bubble issues also. Anyone have experience with the current brunton truarc 5?

FWIW, there are some GOOD free or inexpensive cellphone compass apps available. :-)

No harm done Buck. They look like a great compass, about $90 now on their site.

I want the baseplate style to use in conjunction with a topo map to plot courses. It will be a backup to my current compass. I have a lensatic backup now but can't plot a course without a protractor.
