What would you say your rat population is now compared to say 20 years ago? Even if I was allowed to use colony traps here in PA, I wouldnt because of the population- simply because I dont think it would up my catch LOL.

Lumberjack, we have a lot less rats than 20 years ago. Where I do find rats is in places that do not have cornfields or not many cornfields upstream of where I want to trap. 50 years ago I could catch dozens of rats out of a farm pond. Now most farm ponds have few if any. The proliferation of hawks, eagles, owls and blue herons has surely taken its toll on rats. Another animal that is death on rats are snapping turtles. Doing rat complaints in the summer in lake communities I learned to fasten my colony traps solidly or the snappers would grab a caught rat by the leg or tail and drag the trap into deep water. Have seen snappers sitting outside a rat hole or house waiting to grab whomever exits. Both swamps I trapped rats in this year I have trapped a lot of snappers out of. It is possible that has helped the rats a little.
A local guy raises pheasants and last year he lost quite a few to a litter of mink. I only set a few mink snares this year and all were near his pheasant operation. Every mink I caught was loaded with what I always called meat worms but I guess the real name of them is guinea worms. Discusting things to deal with when skinning a mink.

Another predator of the poor muskrat is the otter and we have a lot of them here, no trapping them in my area. I have seen where they rip apart huts and chase the rats and eat them, they like meat!.......jk

The Niobrara in Nebraska is loaded with otters.....I spose it's just a matter of time before they make their way to the refuge 25 miles away. There goes the muskrats. Knowing the NGPC they will stock some otters in the refuge.

Life ain't supposed to be easy.
