Congratulations! The Niagara River is a fantastic fishery. I darn near froze to death down in that canyon.Did you have a guide? Someone knew what they were doing.

Ontario record brown trout is 34 lbs
Record rainbow is 40lbs
And record lake trout is 39 lbs

That's what the OFAH has on record anyway

Very nice, great day of fishing for sure. When I lived in Montana I did a lot of fly fishing,I remember bringing a friend to the Madison river for his first fishing trip in Montana. It was Oct 23rd 1992 I caught a 27" brightly colored spawning big hook jaw male, didn't have a camera I released it.My friend couldn't believe the size and thought that was a normal size caught there in the Bear trap canyon lower part,I kidded with him and said about 1 in 10 browns were like that, then I told him there were many 18" to 20"er's but that was the largest I had ever caught,I did catch another big brown further up the Madison south of Ennis that was 25,5" released that one too. Both were caught on sculpin patterns.

Niagara River is an incredible fishery. I have fished it many times with Capt. John 'Troutman" Oravec. If the wind is right you can get out on the Niagara Bar and get some great Lakers. Normally fish it with my son-in-laws. We have caught steelhead, browns, lakers, walley and northern pike. Always a good time.

The niagara is the drainage for a bunch of the great lakes. While georgian bay and superior fish are fine to eat, it is generally accepted that due the pollutants flowing through the niagara the fish are too full of toxins to eat.

I think the recommended daily number of smelt recommended to eat from there is one fish per day.

Now multiply that by how many smelt a trout eats to get to 7 lbs and that some serious bioaccumulation of toxins.

That's how it's been explained to me, but I am far from an expert on that body of water

Eating large fish on a regular basis from areas with industrial pollution or even natural methyl mercury in remote places is not good.
I imagine eating large fish from the Niagra river would be like a round of chemotherapy.

DON"'T eat Niagra river or Lake Ontario fish. "Glowing in the dark" refers to the chemical pollutants in these fish. I used to hear that if you removed the lateral line and skin they were OK to eat.WHY TAKE A CHANCE?

You are getting me pumped up. Heading there on Friday. Taking my wife on a fishing trip for our 30th anniversary. Kinda sold it as a romantic vacation to Niagara Falls. smile She did say that if she caught a 14lb steelhead she was getting it mounted. Could be an expensive anniversary.

I love fishing that river.

We used to go up every year around Easter and fish the devil's hole area. One year we had a guide that took us out on the bar. Pulling big browns and Lakers was fun.

It definitely was an interesting trip going up river.

I guide on a Lake Ontario tributary, the Salmon River here in NY state. 30 some years ago when I started guiding, I talked to a fisheries biologist about the toxicity of fish out of Lake Ontario. He said that when they test fish for toxins, they basically blend the whole fish and then test. His point was that nobody eats fish like that, they fillet the fish, nobody eats the organs, fat or skin where toxins are stored. His opinion was that if fish from the Great Lakes are filleted and skin, they would present no problem. Heres a SNL clip from years ago that you'll enjoy.

A great clip from David Letterman. I know it's unrelated to the thread but is a classic like the one I just posted.
