A recent post has a quoted price of $7/lb for beaver. Curious, I weighed a northern NY shearable blanket beaver and it was 2.25 lbs. What would a comparable southern hatter beaver weigh? Mike were fleshing for the hatter market or to sell for fur market? Most of the spring blanket beaver we catch are 2.7-2.9 LBS after fleshing/drying for the hatter market. For me fleshing for the hatter market is different than fleshing for a fur market. As much as $4/5 a pelt difference and less work.

When I weigh my stacks they average right around 1.7 lbs each. (All sizes)
My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Must be some pretty lenient buyers. End user is not going to like paying for beaver leather with dried on flesh and fat.

My thoughts beaverpeeler.
Our 60 inch plus average 2.3 lbs
The other all in about 1.75
All are clean skin no left on "filler" for the hatter market.
Our guy wouldnt take them like that for 7 a pound.

Id lbe interested to see a pic of a dried beaver leather side...one for the fur market and one for the hatter market after To see the difference after drying.

Just for info.
A northern and southern beaver..of comparable size.. will weigh about the same.because while the fur on a southern beaver may not be as heavy as the fur on a northern beaver. ..the leather on southern beaver is thicker than the leather on a northern beaver..so it averages out about the same
And there are shearable beaver in the south..just not as many.
Jerry has trapped in the south for 30 plus years and we've done the math

Hatter beaver weigh average around 1.5 pounds
Thats for both Northern Beaver and Southern Beaver
Northern beaver have heaver fur and thinner leather Southern Beaver have thinner fur and heaver leather
Northern and Southern hatters bring the same money
