When we look at the history of the Dog Proof trap we can see those first trappers were thinking and figuring things out. Thinking out of the box. Catching coon without fear of catching dogs. The first DP traps, that I do not have, but wish I did and would love to add and show folks in my DP trapping seminars were a different mindset. The concept for DP traps was two mindsets. One mindset was to bury, out of sight, and the other just stick it in the ground. Over the years the standard set or what I call the stupid set took over and became the excepted way to set the traps, with very few trappers thinking about digging them in. I wish I could say that I came up with the digging them in mindset but I didn't. What I did do was take an older mindset and adapt it to a newer way. The reason was for a couple of reasons. One digging them in hides the trap from people. Folks can't understand the thinking process of NJ trappers, living in a state that has more people, dogs, and cats per square mile than any other state makes us think differently about how to get ur done trapping-wise. Where the critters are so are people and pets. Next digging them in, pocket sets, or mounds sets, can be put in a min to min in a half. So time is not a factor. Next, was catching the raccoon bang bang bang then no catching at all, yet the coon are still there got me thinking. Were they avoiding the trap or what? Most folks will say change the baits, yet the baits were making the catches at first. I took the same bait that was working and when the catches stopped, I put the bait outside the traps and the coon ate it, but not in the trap. So I went back to foothold trapping mindsets and looked at the presentation, and the catches started again with the same baits just different presentations. Only this time I noticed that better coon was getting caught along with the little ones. So enter the 80/20 concept. Next because we lost the foot trap back in 1984 and our grey fox population growing again snaring is slow with the little cat-like fox. I saw the grey fox will work the dug-in or other advanced DP sets. So I worked on making the DP work on them. Being a full-time ADC/Trapper for over 40 years has forced me to look at things differently when it comes to trapping and capture, in both fur and ADC. And yes I am crazy and I have papers to prove it. Thanks to the old mindsets new mindsets can be had. Also, the dog-proof trap is a great tool in ADC wildlife control or Fur trapping.

Interesting way to look at those little traps

And they still work. Here is one of our older Coon cuffs model still doing its thing this winter here. And here is a 1990s model Duffers DP, still doing its thing. The only old DPs I ever bought that just didn't "last" over time were egg traps. The plastic got brittle over time and a coon would shatter them into a jillion bits when they got to that point. But I still use all my old duffers and coon cuffs. They just plain work. Jim

I have a coon cuff and still have a couple egg traps. Those egg traps were such a pain to get the coon out of I never used them much. My daughter bought them for me at xmas one year right after they came out. Son bought some duffer traps when he was in High School at an NTA convention. I think Rochester MN back in the 90's.

I need to take your course on using those coon cuffs danny. I still have a few and couldn't catch a cold in them. Coon tracks slobbered everywhere but no raccoon in the cuff. I asked Dennis many times about how to do this, that, and the other to make them catch, and I caught a few, but there is a trick I guess and I must not be a tricky dude or something.

One drawback to the dug-in set if you have coyotes in the area is they dig them up and pull the trap out. I show a lot of DP stuff on my FB page but tend to hold back on here.

I use a large tomato juice can or section of pvc pipe. Coon cuff fits right in one. The t stake stabilizes the can and trap top. Bait in the can, put set trap in can with hole up of course. Sections of pvc work real nice on water sets. Both have a ton of eye appeal. Dennis Vicars taught me both those setups.

In the time it took me to make a set with a coon cuff I could make two sets with a foot trap. I have some duke DP's now. They are fast. I get fewer refusals though with my foot traps. I really think a guy needs more than one tool.

I've long thought that coon are a lot smarter than most give them credit for. It's not how many you catch, it's how many are you missing?
Right now I’m having amnesia and déjà vu at the same time. I think I’ve forgotten this before.

I knew John Duffer. He had nothing good to say about "the industry". RIP JD
There are piles of well fed top lot coon in the heavy population areas. Dogs can be worked around by the fur trapper, safety zones and people are the tuff part.

Here you go, Jonsie. These things fit right in a large juice can. Mine all have earth anchors on cable to anchor them. A t-stake pushed down alongside the upright can with the t-handle pressing down on the trap and can really stabilizer them well. Bait in the can is weatherproof, and has a ton of eye appeal. This is my go-to dryland set for coon cuffs for many years. Jim
