Brings back memories of my childhood, thanks for the picture.
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

They are worth over $100 a piece as wiener pigs out here. Wow! Don't think I've ever paid more than $30, and got quite a few at $15-20. Amish auction, but it's been a few years.

Nice looking litter.
Do you sell them as weaners/feeders or feed them all the way out? Boar or AI?
I am starting to build up a small farrowing operation myself. Currently have 2 sows and just bred 2 gilts also.

we had a sow on the farm that we called meanie. She always had litters of 12 or 13 and was very protective of them. When the time came to castrate the piglets you had to lock her up and separate them or she would take a bite out of you.

Reminds me of a story May Dad always told...when he was a kid, my Granddad told him to go grab a piglet. He says, "no, it'll squeal!" "Not if you pick it up by the ear." Well, Dad bought it, and got chased out of the pen, lol. Grandpa laughing the whole time! Cute pigs.
Oh yeah, Grandpa always said a skunk wouldn't spray if you pick it up by the tail...not trying that one! Lol

I am starting to build up a small farrowing operation myself. Currently have 2 sows and just bred 2 gilts also. I do a little of everything. I sell most of them as feeders, but raise about 15 to 20 a year to sell as freezer pork.. I mostly AI breed but use the boar some. This one I can not get to AI so she is boar bred. I have one more that didn't take AI so she is also bred by the boar. I find that even if you want to AI you really still need a boar as it is far easier to find the girls in heat if a boar is around. I mostly AI because I am mostly trying to produce show pigs fo the 4H kids. If I were just producing commercial feeders I would probably just get a good boar and breed that way. Dave I can't even begin to produce them for 30 dollars.

Id raise one very now and then and they were fun No bottle pigs. Only because it is unnecessary, they will drink out of a dish on day one. I just weaned a litter about a week ago that was completely raised on milk replacer. It was a first time gilt. She started out great had a litter of 13 all by herself no assistance needed. Spit the whole litter out in about a hour and took right off feeding them,.she was eating good. It was perfection. But 2 days later she had a rectal prolapse and quit making milk. Had the vet come out to try to save her but she just never came back. Ended up weaning 11 out of the 13 she had.

When my kids were in 4 H, show quality pigs were already well over $100. So they raised and showed dairy goats instead. Raised pigs for ourselves, bought in fall, way cheaper than spring. Plus not looking for show quality. Used to buy from a local auctions, or a Mennonite family that raised them in the woods. Their kids would drive them into a barn. $30 a pop for whatever YOU could catch. I'd tell my kids, work together, wade on in there and grab the biggest ones. Hilarity ensued, but we're GET them up to 70# for $30. LOL, kids were FILTHY afterwards, but had a ball.
