Ok gang, this is a new one to me.. supposedly crawdads are making dogs sick from a chemical they are emitting from the mud towers all over a yard,,, according to a vet. I’ve never ever heard of such a thing. Anyone here ever heard of this??

I ate a small live one once for my nephews and nieces to see.... I'll never do that again.
Chewed a whole tin of Velamints and the taste was still there.

I haven't heard of toxicity to pets though

Take this for what it is worth. I have never had a dog eat a crawdad that I know of. But this does sorta make sense.

Can dogs eat crawfish shells?
No, dogs cannot eat crawfish shells. Before your dog eats crawfish meat, you should always take off the shell. In addition to shellfish toxicity, crawfish shells can cause all types of gastrointestinal issues from the shell not adequately digesting. This is especially common in smaller dogs who have smaller throats. The blockage from crawfish getting stuck in a dog’s throat can cause diarrhea, vomiting, sluggishness, and choking. In severe cases, this may require a veterinarian to induce vomiting or perform surgery to remove the blockage. Self-inducing vomiting can be done with hydrogen peroxide in severe cases where the shell blocks your dogs throat

Your vet is telling you that crawfish mounds are emitting a chemical that's making pets sick? Eating them, I can see. But not from mounds of dirt.

If my vet told me crawfish emit something harmful to dogs I would find a new vet.

Cathryn, that hound of yours probably had soaked up your crawdad aura which imparted resistance to all the nasty diseases the little pinch-meisters carry.

Here's a true one for ya.
Used to trap red fox on a farm about a mile from our neighborhood.
We commonly had blue crabs from the Chesapeake, Steamed pretty n' red. Threw the offalls by the little garden behind the house.
Started seeing brilliant predominantly orange and white fox turds all around at the farm.
From then on, we'd just trap em' in the garden, regularly !
Foxes would eat them shell by the belly full. Old Bay seasoning and all.

I’m sure some can be allergic to eating them just like people. But toxic dirt sounds like a fairy tale.

Moron goes with me to the boat ramp every time to wash or clean out the boat. He attacks kills and sometimes eats them, never saw him have a problem. I think he got pinched as a puppy cause he shakes the daylight out of them first. Pretty funny to watch, he looks for them.

I told those folks that there more than likely is some kind of pesticide used for grubs or other insects being pushed up making the dogs sick. I’m not sure why a vet would say such a thing… thy aren’t like toads.

If a dog doesn't know how to eat and pass shells and chicken bones it would probably help the gene pool to cut it from the litter and let nature take its course I've literally fed my dogs 5 gal buckets of fried chicken bones when the neighbors owned a restaurant. Every new years we cook a huge feast of crab legs , shrimp , crawfish , and clams . The waste goes to the dogs and yard chickens . My little beagle would sure be a sad little fella if he didn't get the chicken and Turkey bones .

It's highly possible that some dogs and animals have severe reactions to purines (hyperuricemia) that are known to be caused by eating shellfish. Same that is believed to possibly cause Gout in humans.

Several years ago, a friend and I were cleaning a bunch of crawdads, while cleaning his dog was eating some. The next day his dog was sicker than Nancy Pelosi the day after. His vet said it was toxicity from eating the crawdads.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have nothing but mutts and iv never had the problems alot of people talk about. Took one of my younger girls into the vet last year to get spayed and they said she was one of the healthiest dogs they've seen and asked about her diet. I just shrugged said dry dog food and and whatever they might catch running the cow pastures table scraps bones ect and they couldn't believe it.
Eveyone I've talked to who talked about bones and the like being bad and had horror stories all had purebreds and the like . Will say though I had to to stop giving bones that weren't boiled or natural to my chawinnie . She'd be in discomfort for the night and pass blood every now and then.
