Here is a start on the next bison horn. I started with a raw horn cap. After about an hour of filing, I am to this point. Next steps are to drill the hole in the tip and cut the base end off square. I am not sure if that diagonal line of marks will come out completely, it was a pretty deep groove in the horn. I will try to take more pics of the process as I go. Also a pic of a raw bison horn, they are pretty rough and scaly.

I'll try to post updates every couple days. Tonight, momma wants a date night and tomorrow is rifle work with Dad. Thanks for the encouragement. It is nice to be back at the bench after a couple months putting a workshop together.

I have a good friend that helps me tirelessly in our formulation facility, and has for many years. He likes to trap and hunt, especially muzzle loading hunting. I wanted to show him that we greatly appreciate all his help.

I am not much of a wood worker or craftsman in general, but I spent several months in putting a black powder kit together for him. All hand crafted from horn / antler material, tanned leather and some special lumber I had lying around. It turned out to be an addiction, in making each piece as nice as I could get them. I had to look hard for a bison horn but found one eventually. It wasn't a large one but worked out well for a primer powder horn.

Once I got started with some ideas, I jumped in to do the best I could for him. I hope he enjoys it.

K Snow, I hope you get great enjoyment from your horn crafting. I found it quite rewarding, but it did present some challenges for me. Making the horn powder measures took some time as did the scrimshaw graphics. The final products on display.

Bison horns can be tough to work with but after seeing your work I'm sure it'll turn out beautiful! I'll be following along too!
