I'm told the catfish come into our river basins in about May to spawn, and was wanting to try for them this spring.

Some 20-30 pounders here if I can find them.

Was thinking a good chunk of sucker or something, three way rig with circle hook and an ounce of lead and slow drift evening through night.

Maybe a drift sock to slow things up a bit.

Am I on the right track?

Find some spots where they are coming into shallow areas to feed.

Our population on georgian bay isn't great from what I hear, but most people get them in deep, wide slow rivers here from what I gather.

I have a thousand Square miles of shallow water, and very few deep river basins, hence trying to target them there...

Shallow areas near the deep spawning spots? Drift slow till I find some, shallow or deep?

I'm an idiot, they are channel cats, not flathead apparently

Flatheads also like woody cover. Log jams and hollow logs are good places for them. I think ADC fishes them a lot and seems like one of those OK fellers likes noodling.

20 to 30 pounds sound big for channel catfish. Are you sure they are not blue catfish?

Y'all have skipjack in your part of the world? That makes good cut bait. Savell is catfish pro. Maybe he'll chime in.

As someone who's never fished them, I'm not sure of much to be honest.

I know a guy who got one 25 lbs.

Cut up Turtle meat is a super great Cat bait if legal where you are. 1 oz weight is too much for drifting, and not enough for stationary jugs in current.

You can catch blues all the way up to 100 pounds and a lot in the 20 to 30 pound range.

Keep in mind I've never even heard of anyone targeting them here. Very good chance of some big fish imo.

Turtle is no longer able to be harvested here unfortunately.

I bought a catfish rod last year. Was the only thing stiff enough yet flexible enough I could find for trolling real big musky lures lol.
