I have a rent a chicken about 4 miles from me.
They have been in business for 4 or 5 years now.
I thought about rent a trap. But after much thought, I realized how bad that could be.
It was just a thought, don't get excited.

I don't think that would go over to good in Iowa at the moment, with bird flu going on. They just liquidated 250,000 in one laying house the other day.

Rent a Chicken??? Why would anyone do that?

I guess maybe you could rent a coop and some chickens to see if you raising chickens is really something you want to invest in or not. Is it a sort of "try it before you buy it" system?

It happens with beehives, but it is normally for pollination of a specific item, ie blueberries or almonds..

What a great business idea. It seems like it’s paying off for whoever created it.

A couple of years ago our small flock was wiped out by red fox. Ever since I started eating eggs from our backyard birds I can’t stand the pale, tasteless yokes in store-bought eggs. So I went on craigslist and various other sources to see if I could buy some mature laying hens. I didn’t want to wait five months before a new chicks would be laying. I was shocked at the prices.

Eh...wot?

That rental price is more than itd cost co-op and all here.

I think ill put an ad in the Market Bulletin and see if there are any takers

They don't offer chicken rentals..least this company doesn't in wv..

They must think were too poor or too smart to pay to rent on a dang chicken.

Wonder if I did a rent ... one get one half price deal itd work in wv?

None of the people I know would even THINK about renting a chicken.lil course there are a few city slickers upstate from me

What are the catches, Cathryn? I know this may come across as an ignorant question. But I don't mean it that way. This sounds like a great idea to me. It's one stop shopping. Maybe they need to include some kelp or electrolytes. But it sounds like a neat idea overall. They need to have an outlet in Virginia because I don't want to pay the extra shipping. LOL.

Yes big business in places. some farms that are "organic" use them for insect control close to there crops. Mike Rowe had a segment about it on how America works.. They serve 2 purposes. The set the coop in the field before the crop goes out. The chickens are raised not to stay from th coop too far. They put down the layer of fertilizer naturally thru the poop.

Cathryn there were people in my local small town that rented them when this all first started.
I believe when they started they used web cams in the pens. All the pens were at the farm near my daughters house, and you rented a chicken and could watch it all day if you wanted to.
I think the idea of taking to chickens to the renters was because they were running out of places to put more pens.
Not sure though.

Huh.. Thats crazy.
I

I do know I could probably certify as organic with my garden
I have about 80 chickens that are free range.

I actually rotate the others on my garden spots to eat weed seeds and to fertilize the spots naturally.

I had pumpkins everywhere last year on one place I had some penned up for 3 months
. its about a 25 by 60 ft patch.

I put some out a patch about 2 weeks ago to fertilize it for me.

Its not too hot once you till it in.

Its hardtop believe people rent em I guess because its not something id do...

I do know if you have enough of them free range you don't have to mow or weedeat much

What about the "free" fertilizer thatcomes with the gig? Anyone bought fertilizer lately? And no extra applicator fees! I've heard of goats for clearing land or weed control. A portable electric fence to keep the goats in and the neighbors out. Scott, I can see some issues with renting out your bull. Even if it's real tame I can see some neighbor kids testing him.

I'm renting 3 hens from an employee . It's for my two year old granddaughter , so she can collect the eggs.

I already have the coop

I will return them in October , so I don't have to mess with them during freeze up

No it's pretty good deal from both sides. IF you just want the fertilizer you rent them for certain amount of time. Then they come get them. The cost of the coop and birds . When done off they go. The portable coops are pretty neat. On a wagon , they roll up, drop the plank to the entry and chicken s come and go as they need.

Wonder what happens when something kills your rental chickens ?
Most company's have a lost rental clause.

This is my set up. Built on a 16" car trailer not fit for the road but great on the farm. I circle it with my electric net goat fence and it keeps the coons, fox and coyotes away. Between the goats and 60is chickens they eat an area down and fertilization is great. Then I move them to a new spot and repeat.

I have more layers than I need currently. I would love to rent some out. Heck 3 or 4 chicken rentals would make a nice profit to pay the property taxes with.

Cathryn, get Jerry to develop and build a solar powered motorized chicken tractor. Charge to fertilize hay fields.

My Mom gets plenty of chickens for free off of Craigslist. Some for laying, some for meat. Always rich yuppies who move to the country and try farming. It usually lasts only a few months before they give the livestock away or sale it for a song.

so you spend a $1,000 renting one or two of those options to see if you want to do chickens short or long term or at all. Not a bad option to make help make the decision and I am guessing many have spent much more on even more fruitless venues.

Yep yuppies moving to the country , got to have organic eggs .
I do wonder if there could be a rent a rooster type of deal .
Many towns and cities allow chickens , but not roosters .
THE CROWING is why .
Say they have 6 or so hens , bring your rooster , or take the hens to the rooster .

After roosters mate with hens, the hen stores sperm in the sperm host glands. The sperm can live here for two weeks, so no worries if your rooster has a large flock to attend to. She’ll lay fertile eggs for a while after he’s gone!

So city people can raise chicks , to keep a healthy flock , producing the eggs they want .
Don't know but it's something to think about .
Stud services ?

I've been asked to rent a pig out more than once for kid's birthdays parties. Even had a radio station that wanted to borrow a turkey for some on location broadcast they were doing.

If I lived near you id be more than happy to let ya borrow a few hens.
Some.of my favorite memories are getting the eggs on my grandmas farm.

Thanks for the kind words Cathryn . My guy has enough chickens to produce 60 dozen eggs a week and he sells them to a local resort for $4 a dozen .
He said I could borrow some for free but I didn't feel right about that

First thing the Grandkids do when they come to visit is run to the coop to gather the eggs.I have seen folks around here rent goats to clear landscape.Guess their pretty good for that.
