The Starrett Combo was a standard issue for Pipe Fabricators at Dow Chemical along with 2 squares, a book of logarithms and the Universal Pipefitter & Layout Guide by John L. Matasovic. Compound bends, miters, & rolling offsets, we used them just about every day.

Construction was actually my first job. I've actually looked at getting either a fab job or back in construction but the local shop just plain Don't pay . And I only make $13.50 an hour so that should give you an idea what their rates are lol. Not to mention most shops want people who already know what there doing not somone they have to train which sucks. But on the bright side I do tend to end up getting burn d out on things when it's just a job.

If you're gonna work with pipe, a wrap around is a must. Maybe called different things on the market, but it is a rolled up instrument that has all sorts of great info on it!

That is exactly right YJ but it seemed as though most never paid attention to all the info on them to take the time to read it. They just used the wrap-around as a wrap-around, rolled it back up and put it back in the box! LOL Every available space on the back of a 6’er had something didn’t it.

If someone showed up on one of my jobs with that I'd have fired him on the spot. We ain't building pianos here, lol.

No seriously, for that fine of detail you're making cabinets not houses.

But I got my start in cabinet shops and had to unlearn some stuff went I moved into framing.

BTW, Starrett is one of the top of the line makers.

I use a speed square for a lot of things, bearing in mind complimentary angles and such.

Just one of the differences in trades. In my case, those tools and reference guides depicts one reason why Pipe-fabricators were higher paid than Pipe-fitters.

At one time Swanson had booklets for speed squares and framing aquares along with booklets dealing with the layout of just about anything else framing related. They used to come with the tool that you bought but i have seen them for sale individually too. Seems like most places don't carry the reference guides or booklets anymore. Also seems like I can never find any of the 2 or 3 copies of any of them that I have when I really need one.

You have got lots of good information so far. The swanson blue book is a must have imo.

The framing square has a knee brace table on it to give you the length of the brace to complete the hypotenuse of the 90 deg. triangle. For example: you have a shelf that comes out 24", find that on the table and it will be 33.94" for the brace. For lengths not on the square divide your measurement by .707 , it will give you the brace length everytime. Both ends will be a 45 on a 90.

United we stand,divided we fall.

You need to use the same pattern board every time or your cuts will start getting off more and more with each successive cut..

Or you could use a set of stair gauges.

True that. I love the precision of a perfectly milled square board and cutting to the 32nd and everything fitting as seamless as physically possible. A real thing of beauty.

But bare bones framing gets covered up so get it close and let the sheetrock crew float it out. LOL

Here ya go.

www.amazon.com/Essential-Guide-Steel-Square-Time-Honored/dp/1565238915

I would spring for the spiral bound so it will lay flat when open.

I saw an antique 2 volume set of Framing Square instructions and wish I would have bought it.

You can do much more than layout stairs and rafters with one.

It sounds like you're creating a gusset- a 45 is pretty easy to calculate because side opposite and side adjacent will be the same length- you're trying to solve for the length of the hypotenuse and Pythagorean Theorem is your friend for this application, I'm sure someone has created an online calculator that you can punch in your values. I use rafter sqaure and speedy squares but if you're over 2' understanding the math is beneficial.
