I have a new shop without gutters how can I keep rain coming off of the roof from eroding the ground underneath. I don't know if gutters are a good option as I have a large maple tree nearby and I think even with filters they would become clogged

Easy number 8 gravel or dense grade . Dense grade will set up almost as hard as concrete. If your roof is on a slope gutters and a down spout will make it wash worse. Concentrates all the water in one spot .My building is 7 years old cant even see a drip edge.

Yea I know need round up the rock but it's either 30 degrees or 40 MPH winds. Today it's going to blow 70 mph !!

I have connected a piece of fire hose to a down spout and moved water a ways from the side of a building.

Soft ground around the perimeter of the building can cause the foundation to fail. I vote for gutters.

My fear of moving stairs is escalating!

Yea and then you have to move the hose everytime you mow then put it back. Like I said I've seen more wash from downspouts. Sure are a lot of barns around here with no gutters and their foundations ain't no where near what I bet his building's is. They stand for decades some even 100 years if termites or meth heads don't carry them off !
Plus he has a leaf problem.....

The "soft earth" issue is fixed with the gravel or dense grade.....

I look past the tree and it looks like a field and perfect for run off. What in the world is dense grade. Never have heard that term and been around dirt work for years? Pit run, classified fill, silt and top soil here. My work is runways, highways and commercial buildings.

Collect some old cars and junk and put them under the eves.

I put some old plastic culverts under my shed, if you cut them in half the would also help get the water away from the building.

Dense grade is what they put down as a foundation for black top when making a new road. Some concrete guys use it in the forms to fill instead of gravel. It's limestone rock ground finer so it has less compaction movement. When it gets wet I've seen it pack as hard as cement. Guys formed a side walk once and boss decided to move it right before we poured It. had to take a back hoe and bust it out as the bobcat wouldn't do it. Dense grade had been in there about a week . Trust me ain't no drip edge going to wash out if you put dense grade around the slab OR number 8"s It's what 99.9% of all Amish buildings around here do. Ain't no gutters on any metal buildings in my area....

Plus You guys priced gutters lately ?

Put gutters up but do not use the end caps. Make a small dam out of caulk 1 inch high on the down side of the drain hole. When it rains, the water will go down the drain, in a heavy rain some will flow out the end and clean everything for you. Works for me.........jk

I had thought about gravel which may be an option. If I put up gutters they would have to have covers over them. There are several maple trees nearby which besides leaves produce thousands of large seeds which resemble helicopter blades.

Wow! And I thought it was windy around here!

I don't care how nice the hand soap smells, you should never walk out of the restroom sniffing your fingers.

What keeps from having a big hole washed out where the water falls off the end ?

I had this exact same issue on my shed except my shed was built in 1964 and yes it was severely eroded from not having any gutters on it. I built the sub grade up then Layed filter cloth ( prevents weed growth and holds the soil in place) a few feet out from the drip edge then covered it with 1.5””washed stone.

You can install a French drains for your gutter systems to get rid of the water if running it out to a ditch or lower spot is not an option.

Otherwise If you’ve got the proper landscape you can bury pvc pipe or plastic tile and run it out to a ditch or catch basin .

We usually install a catch basin at the outflow of the pipe by putting down fabric and 4 inch clear stone to prevent erosion. Yes both of these options are a lot of work and cost moneybut in the long run it’s pretty much maintenance free and can prevent very costly foundation repairs.

Craig all that pipe running, French drain buying and ditch digging just makes the gravel option look even better Plus if the foundation is done right and the grade / gravel s sloped away from the foundation the repair cost will be ZERO so nah gravel cheaper.... LOL
