I have an 8 year old grandson that I'd like to get a book about the mountain men for. Could be about one of the heros, Bridger, Meek or any of them. Or could be about the mountain men in general and the beaver fur trapping that they were involved in.

Can anyone suggest a title or titles of books that an 8 year old might not get bored reading, perhaps with a few illustrations in it to get his imagination working and keep him interested?

I guess im not sure how well an 8 year old would take care of a book, but in reading Master atrappers by Tom Miranda and the beginning is short pieces about mountain men and then goes into a lot more about wel known trappers. But, its 50 bucks…

I’m not real good with how well an 8 year old reads. Probably depends on the child.

Get him The Call of the Wild by Jack London. He will never look back.

I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

My wife found my boys some outdoor related books by Kevin Lovegreen and the hardly put the down and fight over them. Nothing about mountain men but fishing the duck shack. moose, elk ect..

Seeing them really interested in reading and excited when new book are delivered is great.

Try the books by Jim Kjelgaard. You may have heard of Big Red but theres half a dozen more. I have read Stormy when I was growing up. Pretty good for younger readers or nighttime stories.

I'll second this recommendation. Kjelgaard's books are what got me started on the outdoor life. But there's way more than half a dozen... he wrote dozens of books. 45 to be exact. Buckskin Brigade is perhaps the closest to a historical mountain man theme. Haunt Fox, Stormy, and Big Red were my favorites... all include trapping.

I don't know of any Mt Man books for readers that young, but around that age is when I really got into reading and two that I remember loving were My Side of the Mountain(A young boy goes into the mountains of New York to live of the land) and Call of the Wild.
I have a book that is a collection of most of Jack London's stories. I still pick it up and read it on rainy days at camp. It would be a good one for when the boy is a year or two older.

I buy this series of books for my 8 year old. The have good basic info, enough to stir their imagination of historical characters and events.

The greatest mountain man stories every told by Lamar underwood. If he's a good reader he'll have no trouble with it. Sometimes at age 8, you'll need to read to them to get them hooked, then next thing you know they're picking up the book and reading it themselves.
