Social security and Medicare are two different programs. Each program has their own rules and regulations. You might be confusing the two programs.

Last time I checked, Medicare has a penalty if you don’t sign up within a certain time of your 65 birthday.

I don’t think Social Security has a penalty for “late” enrollments. If you take Social,Security at 62 rather than later, you will get less each month.

Talk to some one at your local SS office for clarification.

A late enrollment penalty is given IF you do not have prescription drug coverage from ANY health insurance plan when you qualify for MEDICARE. That's 3 months before, the month of and 3 months after you become Medicare eligible. Typically that is 65th birthday. Sometimes it's when SSA says your disability is approved.

During those 7 months you can get on a Medicare advantage plan a Medicare supplement plan or keep your current health insurance plan if it includes prescription drug coverage

Coonman, if I remember correctly you don't have any insurance. My advice (Medicare was my career) get a Medicare advantage plan (part c) with prescription drug coverage (part d) NOW. There may be these plans in your area with $0 premium. Plus a lot of Medicare Advantage Plans give additional benefits like glasses hearing fitness plan and much more.
Go to medicare.gov enter your zip code and compare plans in your area.

SS does not but MediCare does. I used a WI senior drug program for 5 years because it was much lower cost and my meds were minimal. When I switched part D they stated I was 5 years late in filing. I had been told that our WI senior program was recognized so was upset to find out about the life long penalty which would have been like $23 per month for life. Turns out it was the state that made the errors after several calls and letters. Talked directly to Medicare rep and they were very helpful and efficient to clear up the issues and remove the penalty. There are several folks that decide to wait until 67 or 70 for SS they also need to remember to sign up with Medicare .

well here's the thing coonman: If you go to the senior center there is people there that you could ask about life and social security. They will get you pointed in the right direction. Most of them folks are old as dirt so they got it figured out. Hanging around the senior center you might find a sugar momma that wants you to pet her cat. Since you like cats you never know where that could lead.

Short story I started drawing full SS and still worked with benefits.
Small company and things fell apart.
Needed a form filled by the Employer stating my enrollment out dates.
He held it until one day after my deadline and I am paying a penalty for mine now.
It's real and it does happen

As far as I know, a person can't get Medicare until they turn 65. Dave is not 65 yet, I'm not sure he's even 62 yet because one of his running inquiries is if he should start tapping SS at 62.

So, coonman's penalty is probably that he only started getting "Medicare" getting taken out of his paychecks in recent years. Do temp companies treat their "clients" as "independent contractors" and make the employees do SS. Medicare deductions paperwork on their own...?

Only the government would penalize you for not participating in a free benefit that you paid for when you were working, Was it the insure companies, the pharmaceutical companies or the hospitals who lobbied for this regulation? I have had continuous health care including prescriptions to date. One more example of trying to screw those who take care of themselves instead of getting on the government dole.

A person can get Medicare IF SSA approved a person's disability claim.

I am covered by VA disability. I will file for SS, should I file for any SS health benefits? I get all healthcare benefits from the VA, so, I will not use prescription plan or other medical benefits. I have healthcare currently, at work, only to cover my wife.

Dave, the penalty they are talking about is because you don't have medical insurance. When you go to sign up for medicare is when the penalty will be assessed.

Go to your local senior center or other outreach program. They'll help you find an insurance plan that works for you. A lot of the plans are cheap or even free. Once you have a plan and hold it for so long the penalty will go away, or be reduced when you do eventually sign up for medicare.

It will require some legwork on your end though.

You could even call up the closest SS office near to you and have them explain it better.
