I always fished for halibut every time I got to Alaska. Kinda a combination of hunting and fishing….you shoot the big ones with the .410 before you pull them in the boat.

Are you shooting birdshot or slugs out of that Snake Charmer?

I have nothing clever to put here.

Never thought about having to shoot them but I could see where the big ones flopping around on the deck could be very dangerous, now that you say that Bruce I remember someone on here that fished out of Homer, familytrapper maybe, I always liked his pictures.

I suspect that the price is high there. Dock price has been hovering around $8-8.50 for gutted gilled head off weight. This will be my 36th year comm fishing them and have to say that I’ve never even seen someone shoot a halibut. I guess it’s popular on the charter boats though.

It’ll make you suck air, roughly 35 a pound but man it’s good and it’s been a long wait.

2 3/4” #6 shot. The bigger fish get shot in the head when you get them next to the boat. Anything under 50#, you gaff them and club them. The one pictured above was in the Icy Straits, during some down time on a brown bear hunt.

Lowest price is probably gonna be mid-late May as that’s when the most fish is landed. Icy Straits is rich ground. Current flushing in and out of the Gulf. That’s a nice fish BigBrownie !

Here’s one from 2008, with my son while we were black bear hunting. Everybody on the boat was taking a nap midday, I got this one jigging a piece of pink salmon in 200’ of water.

Took the wife fishing in 2013 when I retired. We caught over 200 that week.

I didn't care for them in the skiff alive if they had much size to them. It was pretty crowded with all the stuff we hauled. Loop a snare over the tail that had a rope tied to it, cut the gills and leave them over the side.

All nice healthy fish. MJM , I remember doing that when I hand lined out of a skiff. Bleed em and tie em off until they calm down

Several times there were so many on the bottom that you would hook two fish at a time with a treble hook on each end of the lure.

They are a fun fish to catch, they fight hard the whole way up from deep water. My cousin from Virginia loves them, and we get after them in summer. Starting to plan our trip now. Summer's on its way!

Halibut really are amazing fish. No swim bladder so they can change depth fast. Very firm meat with a really long shelf life. Have caught them in 3 fathoms all the way to 450 fathoms. I always like to see what’s in their stomachs. Have found birds, stones, smaller halibut etc. And they will feed on the surface if the food is there
