When that was being sold there were no hobby farms. People were making a living and raising kids on 160 acres without an outside job. They worked hard and worked long hours. Often milking dairy cows by hand twice a day. Selling milk cream eggs. Growing corn for silage. Putting up hay. Raising a garden, raising a few hogs. They didnt get many days off or "hobby" farm.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Understood, my sister's and I still own the 160 my Great Gradfather homesteaders near Delphas KS, my Grandpa and my Dad were both born in the house there. They were 3 generations of farmers. My Grand parents farmed thrue the depression. They were some tough and humble peaple. Sure miss them.

Its a shame that a living can not still be made that way. If somebody tried raising kids without electricity, without running water, growing and butchering all their food today, social workers would be hovering around incessantly. Especially if the kids all had only one pair of shoes and 3-4 changes of clothes.

Doesn't mean it wouldn't be nice to have on a hobby farm today. Pto would be nice on our 5 acres, but we really don't need a tractor.

Then her mother joined in and assured me they had the money to buy their own in style clothes, lol.

Especially if the kids all had only one pair of shoes and 3-4 changes of clothes. We are living in times that is the product of "bigger is better". We would rather have the neighbors 160 acres than the neighbor and then complain because the taxes are too high. Its the same in small towns where the big chains can undersell the small business eventually forcing them out. Values changed some where along the line. Farm publications were big on promoting hog and chicken houses and eventually there was no public market if you wasn't contracted. After the removal of the live hog contract on the Merc there was no way a farmer could hedge his product unless he could also slaughter the hog and hedge with a lean contract. Gov regulations are an uphill climb when trying to butcher anything for sale. I was one of those living the Big Dream while all the time humming "We were singin' bye-bye, Miss American Pie". When we are a part of something and offering no resistance then we can't wholly place the blame on someone else, I fear the remedy when it comes to trying to turn a 100 car train on a small 5 acre plot of that family 1/4 section.

Yep Hydro that was the Minneapolis Moline tractors. I would hate to have to build an OSHA approved guard for a flat belt system.
