I had that scope with a different reticle, the glass and turrets on the gen 2 PSTs are much much better than gen 1, also a true zero stop instead of the crappy shims. I would hold off for the gen 2 if you can, they go on sale at midway and others quite frequently. What kind of price did you see them on sale for? I'm not wanting to spend $800 on a scope. I know you get what you pay for but $400-$500 is my price range.

There are other options available without all that added cluster.
swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

I have a similar model. My issue with the Vortex is the short eye relief. Mine is on a low recoil rifle and the scope lightly touches my eyebrow every shot. I could not use my scope on a 7mm. Look at reviews for their scopes. Seems to be a common complaint.

The 5-25s I’ve seen for like 650, and the 3-15s for 550. That’s for the second focal plane models. Not sure what you’re wanting to do with it, but I’d think for hunting anything around st. James the 3-15 would be more than enough scope. I lived in st James for a few years. I'm planning on a elk / mule deer hunt out west next year so thats why I was wanting a higher magnification scope. OK I'll have to keep an eye out for a sale. Thanks

My wife has one of the Gen 2s on her rifle, it is a really nice scope for what she uses it for, long range shooting, its adjustments are positive, and the tracking is spot on, the reticle is a little cluttered, but it makes shooting at longer ranges when time prevents dialing windage and elevation easier and as it is a first focal plane scope the holds are true for all power settings. Now for a hunting scope it is not great, at lower power settings the reticle is a little hard to pick up especially in lower light conditions, the illumination helps a great deal and that is another positive of the scope between each power setting on the illumination dial is an off position so in other words if setting 6 is your preferred setting you don't have to go through all the other settings to get there you just have to turn it on and you are there after you determine which setting you like as a baseline. The other two negatives that I have with the scope for a general-purpose hunting rifle is that it is heavy and bulky. Something that may be an issue on a Ruger is the ring spacing you may have to get one of the picatinny rail adaptors to make the scope work, but maybe not that is just something you will have to check with your rifle and your shooting positions.
I am not a fan of first focal plane scopes for a hunting rifle, they have advantages in a match rifle and a fighting rifle, but for me in a hunting rifle the difficulty of picking up the reticle at lower magnification offsets the advantage of having the same holds Irregardless of power settings on the scope. The "tactical style" scopes have some nice features for the range but they can get in the way for use in a hunting rifle that may be called upon to shoot from 10 yards to 500 yards or more.
For a scope on a hunting rifle I would look hard at the Leupold VX3HD line of scopes they offer a lot of features in a lighter scope for only slightly more than what the Gen 1s are selling for and about the same price as the Gen 2s. If you do decide to go with the Vortex you definitely want to spend the extra 100 dollars or so and get the Gen 2 scope. Midway has them for 699 right now. If you absolutely can not swing the extra 100 dollars for the Gen 2 or the VX3HD, I would look at a different scope altogether maybe one of the non-tactical Vipers or one of the Freedom line Leupolds.

how far are you looking to be shooting , especially at low light ?
that is a lot of scope for sub 250 yard shots
if your shooting a lot further go for it, if not all that Christmas tree reticle will mostly get in the way
if you don't need that kind of long range magnification and reticle there are other illuminated that will be better for those close shots near dark.
magnification is a killer of light , if the lowest you can go is 6x you would get basically twice as much light passing through on a 2x by 32mm as the 6x by 50mm , I had a 6x on a rifle , if that deer wasn't beyond 90 yards finding it in the scope was slow because the field of view is much narrower at the higher magnification at 6.5x the viper has 17 feet of field of view at 100 yards at 20X it is 6 feet
illumination for near dark is more often for lower power optics and if your on a budget it will help keep costs down
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
