Every kid should have a dog.
I've never owned an English Setter, but I've been around a few. Sure seem to be smart, well behaved dogs.

Wife got a red and white last year.
Took it on it's first field trial/training thing last week.

It's a bit birdy, lol.

I have had a lot of hounds. They were always outside animals. Never owned a bird dog. Have hunted with quite a few. This one will be an indoor pet as well as a hunting dog if all goes well. He is a good natured little pup. Breeder gave me a book on training and said he would help with any problems. He must be 80. Been breeding them since the 60's.

Both the wifes cats already kicked his butt. They seem to be getting along now.

Ive hunted with several dogs the last 25 years and the only one ive seen that has the nose my shorthair did (she died years ago) is my buddys english setter. Physically the setter is an absolute beast of an athlete and covers a TON of ground. If he passes through and doesnt snap around on anything, its because theres nothing there. Sadly that dog is about 8 or 9 and slowing up a lot but he is still gettin it done. Buddy has a female hes bred with the male and kept a couple pups. All the dogs are very mild mannered when not in the field.

The more any dog hunts the better it will get. Some dogs are better than others, but none get better at home. I say start them young. They more times they go the more they learn. Waiting a year to start a dog is a loss of a years education. Yes they can be taught things, but they don't hunt there. The fall my last dog turned one he had 117 birds shot over him. We he was two he was better than most dogs ever get. His first birds were shot over him when he was 8 weeks old. The third bird I shot, shooting one a day he was looking for. He was 10 weeks old when he found the first bird I could not find. He would not have had that experience sitting home because he was too young.

That's good advice getting them on birds early. You're not going to put anything into a bird dog that isn't already there, they either have it or they don't. You need to allow the ones that have it the chance to unlock it. No pressure, no guns, just put them on birds and see how they react.

Just got him yesterday. Right now we are working on him realizing he is part of our "pack". Before I let him run around loose in a pasture or brush he has to learn come here. I will start on that in 2-3 days. So far he is settling in nicely. Kinda sorta naturally house broke already.
