Looks like they are going to have a heck of a hard time, trying to refloat that ship.

True, but they got the money to repair the ship, about a week before it took on all that water. Makes me wonder, how big the holes are, to allow that much water in that fast. Apparently, they had pumps running, because they knew it was already leaking. Must have sprung a bigger hole somewhere on that ship, for the pumps to not keep up.

It's been leaking for many years. Some work was done on it last year until the water got too cold and then froze. The remaining work was scheduled to begin next week. They haven't announced a plan yet on how they'll proceed.
I hope it's repairable still. Many tours are given each year to school kids to educate them the right way. Teaching them respect for our country and military.

I believe current ship was named for the 5 Sullivan brothers who all died on the same ship in WW2. Worth saving.

Anything is repairable with enough money.

And time. Seems that if it’s a museum it could just as well be parked on the dry.

I hope it is. It would be a shame to lose her. If anything, put her on land and teach our children's history in dry dock.

Correct. The ship was named for the Sullivan brothers. All lost. Family bloodline destroyed.

Kinda the story of 'Saving private Ryan' movie but fictionalized for Hollywood. Our military since then has made rules now that prevent this type of tragedy of losing a whole bloodline again.

Yes , I agree , this ship is worthy of Saving. Remember the Sullivan brothers , they gave all. The Sullivan family gave even more than that.

Do. Not. Forget. the Sullivan brothers. Ever.

That's what they ended up doing with the USS Drum, a WWII gato class sub, in Mobile. It had deteriorated to the point of literally falling apart so they hauled it up on shore perched it on supports and rebuilt by hand piece by piece.

Sounds like the reason this one is sinking is lack of money spent to maintain it properly. Been leaking for years and now it is leaking faster than the pumps can purge.

My first destroyer (back when) was built in 1944, not much later than the destroyer of discussion here. Yes, it's salvageable, if the feds have the money to refit it and move it into drydock for hull repairs. It's not an active ship, so they only have to weld new steel plates, etc., to get-r-done.
FWIW, my first destroyer (USS John R Craig, DD-885) went into drydock in Sasebo, Japan.... right off the gun line (Tonkin Gulf). We were in drydock for 6-7 weeks. When the Japanese workers began spraying our hull with new paint, they were punching holes through the rusted steel plates, thus we were in a bit longer for those repairs as well. BTW, the Japanese do excellent work !

If all else fails they can go under the water to weld patches on to get the water out and get it to float to fix it right, but I would think that’s the last resort as it’s sitting in dock and there should be other options to lift her.

The president and CEO of the Buffalo Naval Park said yesterday that the ship will definitely float again

How many billions of dollars have been given away to "the arts" while historic military pieces are forgotten? its like seeing our flag disrespected. Not a Navy guy but are the colors still run up as a symbol of not surrendering or is it just that no one has boarded her to take them down? seems if ever there were a time to fly the flag upside down this would be one. distress!
