Had 5 dead the day before yesterday then 2 yesterday and a couple thinking about dying not sure if it’s the bird flu or chemicals or leftover toxic materials from the fire like insulation or a combo of both items? I’ll lock them up for a week and see if it helps slow the die off. Tried to keep them out of there but they come in the back opening no matter ho many times I ran them out. Don’t take much to kill a chicken off to get baby chicks today.

HPAI seems to be slowing around here a bit. I know up by Harris, IA they just completed depopulation at a big commercial layer. That's about 1.5 hrs north of us. With everything you have going on up there with the fire residue, etc., could be a multitude of things. Sometimes the birds act sick, seem dizzy, confused, just plain weird to no symptoms whatsoever. If they're not symptomatic its pretty hard to tell without testing. The flip side is, if you don't know and you just simply repopulate, and it is HPAI, you have a pretty high probability of more mortality by not knowing and not cleaning or "sanitizing" the infected premises. Not sure what SD protocol is for testing, ie County or State, that does the testing. I do know it should be at no cost to you. If your flock tests positive they'll be more than happy to tell you how to deal with it. Curious what your neighbors are seeing in their flocks?
Just livin' the dream...and paying full price for it!

Neighbor has no issues he’s 200 yards away from my coops, that said I’m right on the lake he’s further away so that’s a factor maybe several dead geese around the lake I’m on. Cats dragging dead birds home is not helping but his cats do the same so again who knows.
I can start a new flock and use the brooder house for the next several months until the other coop is ready again I just need to figure how long the virus lasts you would think sunlight would kill it over time?

Supposed to report it to a vet or Game officer Did that called the extension office also I had 8 dead and 6 more thinking about it so I popped the lot and tossed them in the burn barrel once the wind goes down I’ll light them up. I’ll do the same with what I shovel out of the coop put the fire to it. I can’t start a new flock and keep the old flock without cross contamination being a likely outcome if it bird flu. I’ll start the chicks in another building that never had chickens in it.

The reports I read on the bird flu, said that the mortality rate is 2% per day the flock is infected. It sounds more likely that your chickens got into something toxic. Do they have any symptoms besides sudden death? Are they older birds that would have less resistance to the flu?
If it is flu, locking them up together will make it spread quicker, which can be both bad and good.
I hope you don't lose anymore of your chickens.
Keith Old birds young bird over half the flock was dead not sure if the symptoms would be much different similar I’d guess they just wither away better safe then sorry. 25 of these were the tamest birds I’ve ever seen no fear of humans you about tripped over them in the yard the ones I hatched were spookier then the boughten ones.

[quote=KeithC]On surfaces bird flu can survive up to 2 months. In tissue, including feathers, bird flu can survive up to 240 days.

They won’t see the main coop until fall and I’ll shovel the wood chips out and burn the pile asap, disinfect the inside and then the run the brooder house will be the new coop until winter then I’ll move them over to the most protected coop made for winter living.

If your chickens are getting sick from something non viral and non toxic, there is a pill that may help. Tony's Treasure Tablets cure most common bacterial and protozoal ailments in animals and people. https://www.jedds.com/shop/tonys-treasure-tablets-vetafarm/If you have a lot of animals, it would be useful to have some on hand. They contain: + Norfloxacin – a broad spectrum antibiotic that treats bacterial diseases, including Salmonella, E.coli etc. + Ronidazole – same as Ronivet, for the antiprotozoal to treat trichomonas, hexamiter, giardia. + Diclazuril – the coccidiostat + Doxycycline – as a Chlamydia treatment You can buy them cheaper straight from Australia, but it takes about a month to get them. I treat all new birds with the pills and all the birds I ship. They work very well. Keith

Just smoked the last one that escaped the run I will disinfect everything we wear outside around them tomorrow. I just got back from buying 30 chicks and new equipment for them after taking a shower and changing my clothing after the purge. The plan is to use a old metal water tank I used for chicks before this flu thing even came about in a building never used for chickens before. I’ll pick them up tomorrow once the new home is ready to go.
Told the wife the old coop is a no go zone and off limits no going between the coop and the new birds ever when the time comes I’ll disinfect it and clean it up before any contact with the new chicks. The run will need disinfecting also maybe, from what I read before a lot of diseases stay in the ground were the chickens have lived then the newer birds are at risk from lacking immune protections that the other birds had built up to those diseases. I just moved the coop last year due to high water so moving it might not be a option they free range so would that even matter?
