I think was a post here on T-Man probably year ago? Had some discussion about casting reels.
My fishing partner inherited these two Penn 209 reels from his father in-law few years back. Guess he ran into them stuck away in his stuff. Figured might as well try get them cleaned and running. Maybe put in use on couple bigger rods use them for trolling.
He is pretty good at taking his own things apart. He does thinks I'm a bit better at puddering with this kinda thing. So he ask if I would want try cleaning the reels. Well I think he might be a little to trusting now that it's in pieces on dinning room table. LOL
I can say I got the first one apart fairly easy. Didn't shoot any spring in to space or drop or loose any small parts. Yet!.
Pretty sure I can get it back together. Thing is I really don't know what I'm doing. I don't see anything that looks broken or worn. My biggest concern is drag washers. No idea if they are good or not. Look good to me. Guess it YouTube time see if can learn what they should look like.
Haven't check yet either to see if there are still part out there.
I got this little reel clean kit as door prize at game banquet. The cleaner in the kit smells like orange not hippies #9. The little tube of reel grease is called reel butter.

I messaged my buddy when I got this far said reel may never work again..
I got stopped at this point tending to dogs. Will see later if I can get back together and if work once do.

I took a similar reel apart...once...Mac. Wound up taking a bag of parts to a reel repair shop...after I managed to break one of the screws.

I have a bunch of my Dad's old Penn 309s, Senators, etc
Some probably 60+ years old, a few still spooled with wire.

He used to rebuild them.
Man, I wished I paid more attention...

I have a little silver ash tray looking thing that has a magnet under it. Got it I think at a northern tool store. Anyway its great for parts.

I have one of those. I use it in the salt jigging for cod. It's a real work horse. I take it apart every year or so for a good cleaning and a little grease. I replaced the drag washers once. I'm pretty sure Penn still has parts. They also have a great service department. I once dropped a 920 on the garage floor and bent something. No matter what I did or checked I couldn't get it to run right. Boxed it up with a letter explaining how I ham handed it, please repair and let me know what the bill was. I got it back in under three weeks, no charge. I bought the thing 25 or 30 years before. It still runs as good as new. I use it trolling for walleyes in Lake Erie. Wish I had another one.

Well got the first one all apart, cleaned and back together. Dropped couple part on floor. Didn't loose anything and only had to back up once when got a step ahead.
Not sure if it's going to work any better but looks almost new.

some times have to change the pawl for the level wind. Also there is usually a spare , under a screw marked spare pawl. This is a wear part. I have a 209 and a 309, with steel line for lake trout. old243
