I took a long look at the one that had broken through the ice. At a distance through the brush it looked like it might have been a griz ....
The other one had a lot of miles on her judging by the white hooves. The coyotes got most of it.

Not sure 50 it looks to have broken through the ice and got it's front end shallow but you can see the hind end was deep, too deep to get out. I'm sure it struggled for a long time.

We have a high population of moose and see a lot of winter kill. Most I see are broken legs from slipping on smooth ice. Especially calves for some reason.
Also alot of the big bulls are spent by late November and die in December from wounds fighting during the rut. Its common to find dead bulls, good sized ones usually.

When the Yukon river breaks we see moose go by standing on ice chunks drifting past, many are also trapped on sandbars with water rising until they are under water. We have actually witnessed them bust through floating by and never surface again in the churning ice.

The water in the spring during break up is full of moose hair. From spring shedding I suppose.

Floating bogs do have an endless bottom if that moose would have slipped under the water line.
Quite often the peat moss plants when working on the bottom layers turn up quite a few bones.Especially if it is a 15-18 foot peat formation. some of the ice age bison have turned up in their diggings

nice videos
once on a pleistocene mammal dig in the bad lands south of Dickison ND we found a tortoise on a upper ridge. 99% of the time there is no skull so you have to chip away to see if..
It was hot and the diggers wanted some water, so to get back to the truck was a 3 mile walk or down a cliff and 800 yards. I went down the hill and came upon a few bones and a skull plate.
After 3 trips and 15 days of digging there was uncovered a mass grave of 15+ mammals that look similar to lama's from the 50 million year period. What happened was probably a mass flood and tide swirl around a rock formation and a large clay deposited over them to bury so no predators ate or salvaged. Took 3 years and massive labour force to go through all the material.
At the time ND was not using its funds from all their oil extraction and large amount of ND residents visit the Museum in Winnipeg.
