people look at the fur market thru too small of a window.
Most only look at it in the perspective of 40-50 year window,or their own experience.
The fur trade is over 400 years old in North America, and has been going much longer than that worldwide. There have been plenty of booms and busts in that period of time in the trade.People were all doom and gloom during the smallpox epidemic in the 1730's on the northern plains and the hinterland and thought the fur trade was finished. That was 100 years before americans went west as mountain men when the trade was in another upswing. The trade slumped again in the 1840's but boomed again big time in the 1880's,slumped again during the first world war, then came back booming in the 1920's,slumped again in the late 50's,and on and on.
Will us old guys see another fur boom?,maybe, maybe not but the world definitely will see a bunch more long after our fleeting lives are done.

People need to get away from the me me,now now perspective on everything.Thats childish.

They will probably rise, that's really the only direction they CAN go.
Law Dog was correct in referencing the "low dollar" of the 70's, it was a perfect storm of low dollar, new found wealth in some countries and China was buying everything, as they were in an opportunistic economic situation were they had a capitalistic environment but the income/import taxes hadn't quite come along yet. (or they ignored them...)

Me too. And I hate trapping them in the spring when they get into peoples crawl spaces and attics. It's a lose, lose.

This happened in November, 1980.
I had written exclusive permission to trap a 6-7 acre pond and wetland. Lots of muskrat sign. So I set it up for muskrats with about 150 traps. I knew to hide traps and to keep all stakes below waterline. I went back the next day expecting a huge catch. Instead of that, every trap was gone! I could not find even one trap! That was my worst trap theft experience.

I never experienced that kind of loss, but I remember setting one good size Creek loaded with muskrats,I got started early afternoon,I made it to the end of my line just before dark and had to back track to my truck.I was going to walk the bank past my sets, what sets, there was none left.I believe the number was 20+ traps, somebody had come behind me taking them as I moved on.The only ones left were the ones toward the end of the loop.'Rats may have been $7-$8 apiece but you paid dearly for them.Even private property wasn't safe.

China wasn't buying fur in the 70's. They weren't really a force in the market until changes in Chinese law allowed for personal prosperity. I'm thinking China came into the market in the 90's?

My first kid was born in 80. My best cat that year paid the bill. 400 bucks. I was after cats. Lived in rural Colorado. There was plenty of competition but where I was theft wasn't a big problem. Also I was young. I walked and rode a horse a lot. That helped with theft I am sure. Made coyote sets too but I shot more of them. Usually out the window of my pickup. Had a 270. Shot the same bullet I hunted everything else with. 130 grain sierra boat tails. Left a 4 inch tear most of the time for an exit. Looked horrible on a fresh dead coyote but a wash and some sewing they were fine. Read about calling. Mouth calls only were legal back then. Went with a buddy. We got a few to come in. we sat back to back as we heard a lot of stories about bear or lion coming in but never happened to us.

I think the Animal Rights folks will slowly fade into a dull roar. we need to emphasize the money and need for control when talking to soccer moms. The I kill for fun is really hurting us today.

I cringe every time I hear "the sport of trapping". That has a very negative connotation with the general public, like using " trophy hunting" to describe hunting. It says "I don't kill for money I kill for sport". Yet the majority persist in calling it a sport and not an occupation or industry, including our game depts.

That was why we did predator control for subsistence hunters. We got accused of doing it for trophy hunters, because the public don't like trophy hunters. This is why I am a subsistence trapper. Public loves us. At least they don't hate us, yet. smile

Definitely a step in the right direction.Subsistence,or industry, goes a heck of alot farther than "sport".I don't know whats so hard to understand here.

1979 I lived in MN. Mink where 50.00 plus. Red Fox 100.00. Raccoons where 50.00 plus. All in the grease. Auction results for stretched and dried fur off the charts. So no fur will never reach those prices. Select species maybe. But never like the 70s

Wil anti fur everywhere , and now they're attacking all trapping and soon all hunting .
10 years from now many places will outlaw all traps and might even outlaw hunting .
I don't know what they're thinking , but same with deer over population in cities .
They can't control the people that feed them .
ADC will be the only legal animal control in the future .
It's part of the programing in the schools now .

I run a trapping club at my school.

I don't think It's going to come back.
Next season I'm going to trap $5.00 coon I'm done with trapping $2.00 coyotes. LOL
I figure I can catch 30 or 40 coon In a week. And Id rather put up 40 coon then 10 coyotes. But I have my 3 ADC rat jobs that get me a $15.00 nose count and $500.00 set up fees. Life Is good.
