6.8 mm is a 277 caliber.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/army-picks-replacement-m4-saw-230105091.html

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/6.8mm_Remington_SPC

looks like an easy conversion of 5.56 ars. probably just put on a new upper.

Pretty much. Think the powder capacity has been upped.

From the reading I have done the pressure is really high on the military rounds from sig. the cases in guns and ammo or shooting times had a steel bottom to handle the pressure.

The new round will penetrate Chinese body armor among other things.

The SIG round is both bigger and higher pressure than the SPC II.

The two hurdles the SPC couldn't overcome was size to function through the legacy M4 and pressure.

The new SIG was designed from the ground up for a new platform. Whether the new rifle is backwards compatible ie, swapping uppers I do not know.

Won't the 6.8 have more recoil? Can the kids today handle that?

Life ain't supposed to be easy.

I still don't understand the 6.8 mm (.277") over 6.5 mm (.264") for this application

Or some version of 6mm.

Is this a military need or opportunity for Sig to sell a lot of guns?

Bullet weight vs bullet length.

Problem has always been the diameter of the bullet realative to the wound size. Thr 5.56 has plenty of power, but too small of a bullet. 30 cal and above is the right approach. Only exception would be the anemic. 30 carbine.
Myself personally. I refer .30 cal, namely the .308. I used it the Army and i still used it in the civilian world.
Don't fix whats not broken. Sarge
