So I put this little deal together the other day after having the idea in my head for the last year or so. Basically was trying to improve on my last version by making something lighter and would still also me to position my my rod at different positions. Sometimes I want it straight up , somtimes straight ect. Problem is the last one dint have the best locking mechanism. Was more of a friction thing then a positive lock. Anything over about a 10lbs fish would end up moving it if I tight lined but I let them take it with the clicker or light drag 60% of the time.
Anyhow this is what I came up with

Now the way it works is theirs two different sized castle nuts ,one in the actual holder and one on the stake. I welded a nut on the back side of the one on the stake and drilled it out to work as a center guide bushing deal
[Linked Image]

Then The carriage bolt the fits the one on the holder slips though the bushing though the big nut in threads into the small nut.
[Linked Image]
And then you basically set it at the angle you want the teeth of the two nuts inter lock and you lock it by turning the handle on the bolt.

Problem is the number of teeth kinda limited my angles I could get. I think it will give me like 3 right now max. Want to know if anyone knew of something that would work better in place of the castle nuts for a positive lock
The old design was basically the same but used to fender washers and anything over 10lbs with a tight line would move it. Ideas ?
Thanks

Hack the face grooved washers out of an old bicycle seat. Weld one to each element of you holder. Much finer pitch for selected angles.[Linked Image]

If you where to rough up the two inside surfaces of your fender washers so the would give you more friction perhaps. Or cut some matching washers out of sandpaper and glue them to the fender washers? I do like you usage of castle nut.

Simple answer would be to use a castle nut with more teeth

You might try this. I used them to attach my canoe out riggers,

I'm sure with your skills you can make them work.

Nice choice of a reel. I like the opposing u's to hold the rod. Can just grab it and pull straight up for a for a hook. my pole holds are built with a slight upward tilt. I adjust how the pole orients by the way I stick it in the ground. Your design is interesting.

Juat know rhat there isnt a happy medium here. The friction types always have to be retightened the locking type ones lack fine adjustment.

Juat hand a thought... Double your castle nut system if you cant find or easily make ones with more teeth. iE if you have the first nuts at 30,60,90 degrees. The next nut could get you 15,45,75 degrees

We always just used a Y stick stuck in the ground. If you wanted to walk away for a bit,,just lay a rock on the end of your rod handle. All equipment was found on sight. smile

I solved this by simply creating 2 separate rod holders. 1 for the front and one for the back.
Easy to adjust for any rod and if you want to angle the tip up you just don't use the rear one

Just happy to be here.

the bike seat washers could definitely work for you you could also make up a setup with 2 big fender washers and drill a series of holes around for the favorite angles the a hair pin cotter wood give a positive stop , and the nut would keep it from flopping there are actualy several ways 2 big fender washers could work

my other thought is turn your rod holder part that rotates 90 degrees get that weight over the stake rather than off to the side it would require changing the front bend but not the back

you say it moves when you tight line anything over 10 pounds , but like you said most of the time you let the cliccker tell you when you have a bite

weight reduction , portability , storage , transport and not needing to drive stakes would be my other thoughts

you fish mostly waters with dirt or clay banks it sounds like , not sure if your goal is to make these to sell or not

weight reduction could happen a few ways a pvc tube with a bracket that mounts to the stake could reduce weight and probably steel cost

another thought if you want to be able to really hold big fish with pounds of drag

how about a pvc tube with a set of legs at the front that take the weight and basically a double stake plate at the back of the tube to use crossed stakes to hold that down , you could still adjust angle but you would have 3 points of contact rather than 1 and that back would be seriously anchored
the front legs could even be made of painted fiberglass rebar to cut your weight since you don't need to drive them in

If you can find an old tri-pod for a camera, you might try experimenting with that.
They normally have multiple plane capabilities and good collar clamps to keep it solid.

Take two lay the rod across them for horizontal, get a tall one and put the reel near the base and it stands about vertical as you move the reel away from the stick the angle is changed as little or as much as you'd like. Lol sorry Wolfe whistle

Yep, thats more my style, I don't like lugging all kinds of equipment along when fishing.
Keep things as simple as possible.

Very interesting as usual GP. The only reason I have it off the the side and not on the top is Soni can happer the stake in and not mess with the holder. The last ones I made like that ended up breaking them hammering them into a baked red clay bank.
Also really like the drilled hole washer idea, the problem is I really don't wanna have to have a cotter pin I gotta keep track of.

A short lamp chain tacked to your cotter pin would solve that

The two castle nuts meshing together for a positive lock is pure genius! Everyone else needs go back to napping, or arguing with their wives. smile
