Anyone ever had a steroid shot into their disc? Did it help? Going in Monday morning to get the shot.

I have had a ruptured L4 disc since 2005. I have been able to manage the pain for the most part and I do whatever I want within reason. I golf, bowl, longline mink, and still occasionally get on a roof and do repairs. My main concern is my toes and feet are going numb and now my left thigh is starting to go numb. The doctor suggested trying a steroid shot before he considers surgery. He said if the shot doesn't help, the other option is to remove some of the bone in my back to open up the canal the nerves go through and then put a rod and screws in my back and fuse some of the vertebra together. Yikes, not sure I want to do that.

Had a shot once, it was a pointless venture, required by Worker's Comp to proceed to the next level of care (surgery). On the MRI, any idiot could see the disc in my back protruding into the spinal canal. Nevertheless, I was administered the shot, followed by a surgical discectomy about a month later. I, suspect, it depends on your situation as to whether or not it helps. I wish you luck!

I've had over a dozen through the years. The first ones would give me relief for a couple of months, but as time went on they were less and less effective. By the last one I had, I only got about 2 days out.of it. Last May I had 15 vertebrae fused, pretty much my entire back. 3 weeks ago I had 2 fused in my neck. I know of a guy that had one injection 10 years ago and have had no problems since. Good luck, hope it brings you relief.

Hey Randy, had my back surgery in 2009. Only 1 bad episode since. Pain in my leg was much worse than before my surgery. That was 2013. Was scheduled for a series of 3 shots. Morning after the first one I was pain free. Never had another. Good luck buddy. Hope it helps.

I have had them twice. They helped for awhile but then wore off. I have had two lamenectomies(?) and feel they were a waste of time. I never received the rod and screws just bone removal. I think a fusion is next for me but I will wait awhile.

Another thing. My doc put me to sleep for about 3 minutes. Used a round tip needle and flourasin under xray to administer the shot.

Dan,

The doctor will be using xray to administer the shot.

If the shot works, I won't have an excuse as to why my golf game sucks!!! grin grin

I had that shot in Feb. Doc said it was highly unlikely to work. Worked great for me. Only downside is the shot is very uncomfortable as the needle goes in stages. Not all at once.

Cortisone shot mostly functions as an anti-inflammatory. Swelling goes down taking pressure off of nerve. Each shot gets less and less effective. You may get days, weeks or months of relief, everyone is different.

My wife has gotten them. The shots are no longer working. He is sending her to a neurosurgeon. He said her next step is a Lamenectomy (SP?). Hopefully it can be done without a fusion. A lamenectomy recovery is about 4-6 weeks. A fusion recovery is around 4-6 months, maybe longer.

She said the first time she got it done the Dr. pushed the medicine too fast. She could hardly walk the rest of the day. By the next she was up and moving really good. As time went on the time between her needing the shots got less and less. The first one got her about 10 months of relief. The last one it lasted about a week.

Had have half dozen of them and had temporary pain relief.

They are very uncomfortable to have administered.

Also had a laminectomy which also
provided temporary pain relief.

I would not do a laminectomy again or ever as it weakens
the bone structure in your backbone and you are never right again.

I had a run in with a little explosives in 2005. I’ve had maybe 60 to 80 shots in various places. I’d say 100% of the time I’ve gotten relief.

One shot cured my pin down my left arm and that’s been 9 years. Another shot cured a pain in my thorax region which is SUPER difficult to access.

The lower back and knees see shots of cortisone or some steroid every 5 or 6 months. I don’t experience ANY discomfort on ANY of the shots.

Maybe I’m lucky.
