These planed boards will be poly and used inside house. A few have a bluish stain. Can this be removed with Clorox?

I’m not sure , blue stain is common on pine, probably be pretty if you finish it.

Is it sticker stain? Sticker stain is a fungal stain that comes from wood drying too slowly under the stickers. The marks are across the width of the boards. If yes, you may be able to plane or sand them out as they are not too deep usually.

It could also be sap stain which is also fungal and there's usually not much you can do about that.

Or it could be iron stain which is a chemical reaction. That is usually found in oaks when the tannins reacts with iron.

I've never tried bleaching but I would think it would make the wood a lighter color at the stain than the rest of the board?

Eh...wot?

I don't think it can be removed. It is stained deep into the wood. I think it is caused from dead trees being cut and used for lumber. I just plained some spruce that had the blue stain. I like it because it adds to the character of the wood. But understand where it would hard to match to other wood if it is stained.

I think backroadsarcher is right. Dead trees being cut up for lumber. I just cut about 10 pines down last week to open sunlight for my garden. The only tree that had any blue in it was one that was half dead my neighbor cut down to send with the guy that took them to the sawmill.

As far as finishing it if you put polyurethane on the blue i think it will finish just dark and not really capture the blue. Stains are the same if i remember. I have worked alot with home sawmill cut lumber. Take a small piece and finish it out and see what color it will be.

the black stain oak gets can be reduced by mixing citric acid from the canning section of your grocery store with water. let it sit on the stain a few minutes then sand it

It is through the log usually when you saw it. I prefer to use the blue any chance I get. Mike

Pine blues as it dries. You can find blue in standing dead trees and in green trees cut and left for a few months. It is a fungal process I believe and goes throughout the wood. Kiln drying stops the blue from forming. Blued wood is very popular for cabinets and furniture in our area. On a side note I once saw the most vibrant purple in some western larch we cut at the mill many years ago. I wish I had bought every piece but I was young, dumb and poor and didn't buy it.

As others have said, sticker stain adds character depending on what you are doing with it and often turns out pretty nice.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Mountain pine beetle kill causes blue stain and depending on how much get put into #3 grade lumber. But with these past prices as they are, some standards may be lowered.
Structural strength is decreased with lots of stain so the # 3 grade. When secondary beetles tunnel deep in the wood, you dont know where the rot is and stain radiates away from their chambers.

Blue stain is mildew stain, it comes from not drying the lumber properly or leaving pine logs lying in the sun too long. Warm weather Pine needs to be sawn soon after cut from the stump and the lumber Stickered and put under cover with good ventilation. Blue stain usually cannot be removed.

Thanks for the replies. Stained 25% this afternoon. Maybe it was light blue coloring but after hitting it with a stain called GunBroker everything looks fine. Poly tomorrow.
