After I got my fingers caught in a 550 I put this together.
It's a 2x6 and two furniture strips.

OK since all 550 come center swivel the hole make the trap sit level.
So the trap won't slide.

When I set the trap it was not flat because of the swivel and when I set
it it slid and caught my fingers.

I see what your getting at, sound like your practice setting on a bench or other hard surface, and I can see were that could help you out. You should also get in the habit of lifting of flipping over the loose jaw ( when the springs are compressed ) before reaching in to the pan to set the trap. This is a foolproof way to set the trap without ever catching your fingers by mistake.

Catching your fingers is just part of the process. I usually get pinched once or twice a year. I’m pretty sure you can’t catch coyotes if you don’t catch yourself first, I read it in a rule book somewhere….

Haha, I go ahead and stick my hand in on the first set I make to remind me of how it feels and get it out of the way. Whole hand doesn’t hurt at all like a single finger! Especially if you already have it anchored!!

Never tried a 550 on for size. I like the #3 four coil Bridgers myself.

Get the #5 Bridger instead for beaver and save yourself some headaches by educating some beaver.

You are going to use a slippery surface piece of wood rather than the ground to set the 550?
Um.....
Well....
Fire in the HOLE!!!

In my opinion that is a giant waste of time and space and completely unnecessary for setting a 550, also the 550 is not a good choice for a beaver trap at all. That said, it’s your deal, good luck.

I believe he was going to use a Bridger # 3 for beaver. Still not ideal, but some guys like them. I personally use #5s for beaver, cause those back feet are huge.

Smacking your fingers every now and then is just part of the process lol. I’ve probably been grabbed by every trap I own at some point. The 330 hurt bad but by far the most painful was a brand new 4 coiled duke #4 that just got the tip of my middle finger. Lost that whole fingernail. It’s not bad getting a couple fingers, or even just one up higher, but when the tip of one finger takes the full force of the springs….OUCH
