Tons of good information on this if you take the time to research it. I never really gave it much thought until I was diagnosed with RA. Since that time I have done enough digging that Im convinced Im on the right track. I eat almost no vegetables of any kind and keep track of my blood work. As one low carb doctor told me, " blood doesnt lie." A lot of vegetables are full of lectins. My fat/protien ratio is around 2/1. Like Yukonjeff said, stay away from seed oils of any kind. Also keep in mind that doctors get very little training in nutrition. Dr Ken Berry has a lot of informative videos on Youtube as do many others. Good luck

I lost 35#, down to my target. No soda or candy, retire from a mostly desk job and spend all day on the farm. Except for recovery from appendicitis and a hernia, I run a tank of gas through the chainsaw every weekday. Either edge feathering, clearing so I can build a new fence, removing red cedar, cut up a tree that fell in the field, something. With the habitat work and trapping 50 nest predators a year the quail and turkey population has improved.

Eat food not junk, physical effort and most people will lose weight. I hate exercising at a gym, I just won't go. But I will do stuff on the farm and walk. The more I'm out of the house the less I eat. So I try to stay busy. Blood sugar is much better as well.

Protein is your friend.
Eat meat fish, fowl. Not the skin on chicken. Bake the chicken instead of frying.
No or few carbs and fats.
Green vegetables are very important too.

Join the local YMCA. It is low cost and they have a sliding scale for low income,. They have equipment that will work areas that you cannot do on your own. For example, I have a severe back injury. They have 3 machines for the back and spine that help me tremendously for strength and range of motion.

Here is another benefit of the YMCA - when the city digs up your street and turns off your water, you can take a shower there.

One thing when trying to diet is to make sure you’re getting enough fiber, I watch it because of hemorrhoids and take Metamucil every day to help.

So, the most important thing about diet in my opinion is....eliminate processed foods as much as possible so that means look @ ingredient labels and purchase foods with one ingredient and maybe 1% or so of something else like sea salt...

Peanut butter is a good example....most have a long ingredient list. Even the 'natural' ones....Smuckers offers a natural peanut butter with only peanuts on the ingredient label. No other commercial brands come close to that.

The next is: if your diet is mostly processed foods then accept the fact that for a sustainable change to occur you will have to do that gradually. Overnight drastic changes and wonder 12 week diets do not work for most people in the long run and we want a sustainable change that will last the rest of our lives. so, change things a little at a time, find natural foods that you enjoy and give your body time to adjust to that...may take 12 months.

The next thing I believe is important is to have a balance of macros and not seek to eliminate or almost eliminate any one macro. Carbs are not the enemy if they are good carbs and are a balanced % of your total.

Next is the fact that you need to exercise....at least 1 hour a day or 7 a week. Lots of bodyfat can be lost by doing a low intensity cardio daily for 30-90 minutes while fasted which means not having eaten in the past 8 hours or more.

We all age but some of us do it alot more gracefully than most of the US population. Lower body fat % and good lean muscle mass along with good aerobic capacity = very good quality of life.

For me personally yes I can tell the difference when I don’t take the Metamucil and or get enough fiber, but there are options for people on a low carb diet, a couple of people I know had trouble with not having enough fiber in their diets and they said it hurt pretty bad to get things moving again.

Some of these guys are really making it difficult and painful.

All diets boil down to one thing, and that's to burn more calories than you consume. That's all there is to it.

So use TDEE calculator such as quicktdee.com to figure out how many calories you burn in a day. Then eat less calories than that number. For every 250 calories per day you eat below that number, you will lose half a pound of weight a week. There's absolutely no reason to deprive yourself of your favorite foods to lose weight. I lost 80lbs eating ice cream every evening.

Lack of fiber from doing a low carb diet put me in the hospital for a week with a tube in my intestine several years back before I realized carbs are not the devil.

Yup! Burn more than you consume. That is what it is about.

Get some exercise and you’ll be fine.

Calories is a you need to watch for weight loss. If you want good lean muscle mass and lower body fat then there are other things to concern yourself with.

Take the ketchup away and it looks pretty good!!

Not a huge fan of condiments.

Coffee, black, no sugar. When you get hungry for a snack in the middle of the day have a cup of coffee instead.

I’m more of a mustard guy, but good to know about no sugar added ketchup.

Once people get used to foods not loaded with sugar, you end up preferring that. You can still taste the natural sweetness in foods. There are also sweeteners low in glucose spiking content, such as stevia and agave nectar. Any of the fake sweeteners , and high fructose corn syrup is horrible for the body. Look at labels . All kinds of “oses “ can be slipped into certain foods. No sugar or low sugar ketchup is good.
