If not for Mitch Garland would be on the Supreme Court! How would you like that ?

This is by far the best and maybe only noteworthy thing he has accomplished. Much more is expected from someone in his position.

Reagan would be labeled a Rino by many now a days.

Reagan was hated by the Bush wing of the party.

"Furthermore, Social Security was certainly not Reagan’s “highest priority.” Reagan had never been a friend of Social Security. He was a hardliner when it came to all government social programs. He called unemployment insurance “a prepaid vacation plan for freeloaders.” He said the progressive income tax was “ a brainchild of Karl Marx.” And, he called welfare recipients “a faceless mass waiting for handouts.”

Reagan referred to Social Security as a “welfare program” and, during the 1976 Republican Presidential Primary, Reagan proposed making Social Security voluntary, which would have essentially destroyed the program. There is no way that anyone who knew Reagan’s record would accept his claim that Social Security was his highest priority. He had always wanted the program eliminated, or at least privatized."

You know what they say, the proof is in the pudding.

Changes were made to SS in 1983 to keep it solvent? You'll have to remind me who the POTUS was in 1983.

We also managed to double the federal debt during his 8-year tenure.

No, the democrat congress doubled the debt. Reagan like so many other wartime presidents had to cut a deal with the devil in order to win the cold war.

Dems tax and spend GOP spends but does not tax. Both parties always want someone else to pay. The Dems, current rich and the GOP someone much younger and hopefully employed.

I guess they could have printed money? Pretty sure his advisor Alan Greenspan said no. Like warrior said, he never owned congress. Not like Bush and Trump. Hard telling what could have been accomplished if Reagan had a Republican congress when there were still a few Fiscal conservatives in Congress. The first time the Republicans gained Congress in 50 some years they managed to balance the budget. After that, it all fell apart, never to be fixed again.

FYI Bryce, Reagan raised the payroll tax and put Federal employees in the system. Then they (him and the democrat congress) spent all the extra money and some. Reagans military expenditures gave us the peace dividend of 90's with the collapse of the Soviet Union. Then what you said happened.

Even Slick Willie became a Conservative in 90's smile

"The Era of Big Government is Over:" Clinton's 1996 State of the Union

Then we went and got compassionate. frown

The congress under Reagan belonged to Tip O'Neil nothing moved without the that Boston mick's approval.

Just imagine what could've have been under Reagan and the Newt Contract With America of a few years later.

We won the cold war? It looks like it could blow up any day.

Dirt, the government running deficits is the textbook definition of "printing money".

Peace dividends of the '90s?

Selling bonds to private investors is printing money?

I thought selling bonds to the Fed who makes up the money to buy them is how money is printed ( created)?

When treasuries pay interest above inflation, they are attractive investments. Not so much since 2008.

Are you saying the Federal Reserve balance sheets didn't increase in the late 80s?

We should have stayed on the gold standard.

I am far far to the right of Mitch...but I think we need to accept that not everyone in the Republican party is going to be as far right as us. If we vilify every republican that doesn't vote as we want them to 100 percent of the time we will end up with a bunch of far right wackos. Granted, I wouldn't think most of them are wackos but a great majority of the country would. I think this is beginning to happen with the Democrats right now. The country is finally waking up to what the squad and the far left have in mind and don't like it. I dont want that to happen to us. The country is never going to be as far right as I am, it probably hasn't been since the late 1700's. I don't know...my 2 cents.

Not as far as I can tell. Treasuries were paying twice the rate of inflation some years. Which at the time was maybe 5 to 6% higher than inflation. Probably didn't have a problem selling treasuries to private investors.

Greenspan was gold standard guy in the 60's Thing is, you have to play the cards you are dealt.

At the time the Fed was working on their dual mandate, not bailing out irresponsible governments. They were practicing QT not QE.
