Wow!I wasn't aware Indiana had snakes that big. But,I wasn't aware Northern Michigan had black snakes that size until a few years ago either. We have a large shed attached to the back of our house that I use as my fur shed.A few years back I was standing about 20' from the shed in some tall grass and I saw a large snake right in front of my foot.I couldn't see much of it other than it was large.I was working out of state and when I got back I went in the fur shed and there was a shed snake skin,I'm 6' and I could hold it over my head and the other end still touched the ground,I figured it was the same snake I saw in the yard.I never did tell the wife,if she knew it she'd be throwing gas all over the house and lighting matches.

My Dad talked about a snake that swallowed a chicken egg, crawled through a hole into the next nesting box and swallowed another. He was stuck.

That often happens if a snake is interupted while swallowing as they are particularly vulnerable while doing so. If threatened they'll unload in preparation to flee or fight.

It tried to flee..the pitchfork and I fought.lol

We won

That is about as big as they get around here. My wife hates snakes to.

In most parts of the east rat snakes are the biggest seen.

Im glad to see a big black snake or coach whip around here. They eat vermin and without them the rattlesnakes will step up to the plate.

What a beauty of a black snake, Scott. You're right, he is an older one. I'm glad you didn't kill it.

Non-venomous snakes not only get rats, mice, insects, a number of them even take out venomous snakes as well.

Of course, I don't like anything taking bird eggs of any kind, and I make sure the hardware cloth is tight and small so no snakes could get in my coop . If they do, they're very small and the chooks will make short order of those themselves. There are no large snakes in this NW area , anyway.

I used to catch Blue Indigos in Florida, amazing tame large ones that have since been on the endangered list. There is nothing quite like an Indigo. Gorgeous rich colours that gleam metallic in the sun. As tame as can be. They get on the large size also , like the black snakes.

No need to be askeert of the non-venomous ones at all...in fact they can hunt in earnest for the truly venomous ones and keep your sense of security intact .

I hope you see your guest again to take more photos of him, Scott smile

I killed one in the chicken house last year that was right at 7'

Should have gotten a real good measurement because the state record here is about 2" longer

Out in the woods they get a pass, up close to the chicken house they die

Who the (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) came up with that Georgia law?
I will kill any venomous snake near the house and any aggressive snake wherever I run into them. Water snakes are the worst about having bad attitudes. Leave me alone, I leave you alone, come at me and I am neutalizing the threat by whatever means neccessary wink

Folks with some common sense. There's zero need to kill a snake ever. The threat is all in your head.

But it was put into place to stop collection from the wild, particularly the Eastern Indigo. Georgia will light you up over an Indigo.

I haven't seen them except on Youtube, but I am told the big blues are hard on rattle snakes so I'd prolly donate a few chicken eggs to have one around.

I don’t remember the last time that I killed a snake. It would take a rattlesnake or copperhead in my yard and that is just because I have 5 grandkids between 1 and 8 here every day. They aren’t afraid of anything. Lol
There was another snake on the same limb and it crawled down before I took the picture. Our next warm day I’ll see if it’s back out and try to get a selfie.

Hoss, I think they are so easy going when they get bigger , that they probably wouldn’t try very hard to climb into a nest box with an angry hen guarding it….I never had any trouble with them when I had chooks in Florida. It was the coons and possums that gave me grief. So I think you’ll be fine !

Scott, I totally understand about the kids and rattlers and copperheads. Totally. I’ve heard from a few folks that they were even faced or followed by an aggressive copperhead while hunting in woodland.

When you find your visitor again, remember to tell him to smile with you as you get that selfie ! grin
