Now would be the time for anyone in the health care field. Staff shortages across the country despite what boco says, and in many cases they will help with the paperwork.

My daughter in law just got news from her doctor that she will have to wait 6-8 months for a colonoscopy. Our universal health care is almost to the breaking point, so if anyone wants to come north, nows the time. Lots of good hunting and trapping !

The NWT and western Nunavut had to send women to Edmonton to have Babies for 2 months this winter. No nurses to staff the birthing ward.

Same problem in Florida. The biggest problem here is management. Affirmative Action got unqualified people management positions who are running nurses off faster than they can hire new ones. Management doesn't care as they're only there for the minority benefits.

Vaccine mandate not helping either. Some medical type folks are leery of said injection.

I think what Gary is referring to is that healthcare in the USA is a joke. I know in Virginia it is.

No, shortage of nurses.
I lost my medical files in a divorce. Good luck getting into a new facility without your medical files from the past 20 yrs.

Many rural areas of the USA have huge shortages of health care at almost any level. If it costs hundreds of thousands to get an MD and a lot for nursing and even dental care those loans won't get paid off working in a sparse low income region.

I thought the doctor(s) kept the files on you? I kinda see what you are saying. I went to the doc to get a TB test done so I could chaperone with the school. They had nothing on me. To be fair, I have only been to the doc a few times in the last 20 some years (cause I didn't know how to stitch). Also, the doc that I had when I was younger has passed away. I thought that they kept the files and just passed them to the next doc.

Eh, guess I my wife will figure it out when they have to drag me out of the woods.

I'm with Jerry. Providers should have your records. Maybe not from 50 years ago but at least for a few years. Now that I think of it, I don't have hardly any medical records here at my house. If I did they would be from medical bills.

I don’t think that’s the reason for the vast majority of the shortages we are seeing today. The government has programs for rural areas for doctors and nurses for just that reason. I don’t know all the details but it’s usually something like if they agree to work 10 years in a rural/underserved area their student loans will be forgiven.

Geez Gary how much did your wife hate you to take your medical records? You must have had one of them backwoods southerly lawyers that you found while watching TV at 4AM.

Just not enough nurses in general, new nurses in the profession have a high rate of leaving the profession, older nurses are retiring in droves for a bunch of reasons.

My wife is a nurse manager of 5 different units, she has a staff of well over a hundred she is responsible for and for sure staffing is her biggest concern.

In the short term it was government decisions that have driven front line nursing numbers lower. The government in Ontario would announce that they where increasing the nurses in the public schools, well those positions where filled by staff nurses in the hospital. Then they would announce that public health nurses where being increased in all health units, those nursing positions where filled by staff nurses in the hospital. Then they announced that they where increasing beds in the hospital and went to hire nurses and guess what there are none. Takes 4 years to train a baby nurse and another 2-4 to train to a specialty as an expert, you just do not whistle them up or start squeezing them out.

The kicker on top in Ontario is 3 years ago they put a wage raise cap in for government employees of 1%. They than put an exemption in place for firefighters and police officers because they where essential but held to the 1% for nurses.

Hence you get the rise of travel nursing, short term contracts that pay market prices for nurses in almost a bidding scenario.......work for 2-3 months and make what a fulltime hospital staff nurse does in a year normally.

Good review of the situation Saskfly.
Manitoba has gone 4 1/2 years without renewing their contracts or raises for the nurses.
Oh but the political lip service they are getting more nurses into the system and 1/2 never make it past first year

When the retired nurses stepped up and worked at the vac centers, they were to get nurses pay rates but that never happened

‘I’m from the government and I’m here to help.’”

Will we ever learn? No let's double down.

Unfortunately my daughter is a rural nurse and already deals with our system. That is probably enough pain. frown

Seems like right across the country there is a shortage of both doctors and nurses. When I visited my brother in law a couple weeks ago there was only 3 nurses split between the ER and cancer floor. I talked to one of them and she said its been going on for years and they are so busy all they can do is put out the fires.

I know BC doesnt pay that well, but here they do. An example is a paramedic in BC might get 15-18 an hour. My daughter makes 45 here. In the small hospital my daughter works out of an RN can make a pile of money too. From what Ive read the doctor shortage is and to some extent, the nursing shortage is because so many are leaving to work in other countries where they can make more money. I know a lot of Canadian doctors end up in the US.
