Most of those have an inline fuel filter to catch any water or crud left in the tank. It may be that simple.

Been fighting with mine for about a year...fuel pump and cleaning the carb. Finally saw that Chinese carbs were only 20 bucks so put one on and bingo, runs like a champ.
Not saying for sure that's your problem but ya gotta start somewhere. Odds are you are correct. But replacing the carburetor is the easy way out , OK for those that are not as handy , but cheap , so I approve. I fix lawnmowers as a 'hobbie' . I get them free off of Craigslist. My 'used car lot' - The ones I get off Craigslist about 90% of them have fuel related problems. I go through the fuel system and have them running in 15mins or so. Leading causes , dirty fuel or dirty carburetor. With today's ethanol laced fuels this happens a lot. Wolfie , check the fuel to see if is clean , if even slightly suspect , dump it out and replace it. Rider mowers tend to sit outside more than push mowers , so water getting in the gas is common. Just one tiny bit of grit or a drop of water in the gas will cause the EXACT symptoms you describe. After inspecting to see if your fuel is clean , replacing the carburetor with a $20 Chinese copy will fix you up , 90% of the time. Easy way to test if you have fuel problem , spray some ether into the air filter housings and see if the engine revs up to higher RPMs unlike bucking and stalling.

Cleaning works unless its an older carb that has hot glue to seal machining holes. The ethanol in the gas now loosens it up. On mine, the needle was wore out and sticking in the seat.

I was given a new riding mower by a B.I.L. Many years ago . Idled fine , quit if you throttled it up. When the motor was painted the filter was painted also . New filter solved the problem . Try a new filter . Might work . Hope you get it working.

Air filter, fuel filter, I've seen the rubber fuel lines collapse inside, carb issues, are the linkages right? Bad gas?

We do the same thing, even on 4 wheelers and go karts. Fuel and a dirty carb, is the problem Most of the time!
