Mud motors I am looking to buy a mud motor for a Jon Boat. Specifically a six and a half horse ppf wood duck which is a shorter shaft long tail. Anybody have any input on how they are for trapping with all the starting and stopping and maneuvering required? Jon boat is a1432 equipped with oars and a push Pole. Have used it for years with an outboard but is limited to where it can go. The Mud Motor does not come with reverse. Can anyone give me any info thank you

I run a go devil 23hp motor on a 16 foot coast guard front. I like the 23 hp because it comes with electric and pull start. Ive driven the ones with bigger motors, but to me they are too much motor, and only electric start. Very easy on fuel. ALWAYS wear the kill switch strap and life jacket since things can happen fast. Learn how much your boat will slide in corners at full speed. Put a handle bar in also. You can learn to maneuver your boat by feathering your prop partially out of the water. The biggest thing to remember is you are giving up speed for destination. Also i use synthetic oil to make things turn easier in cold weather. Ive has mine for 20 years and wouldn't be without one!

Hey, Walt! Good to see you on here! I have to admit I have zero experience with the Wood Duck with the shorter shaft. I do have 22 years of experience running a 23hp Stump-Jumper on a 15' 11" very wide Mirrocraft semi-v for hunting, fishing, and trapping. I love it. Last Fall I put an old 5hp Go-Devil on my 14 ft. Herters Duck and Goose skiff and love it but will be switching the engine from the old Briggs 5 hp. to the Predator 6.5 with the electric start kit. The old Briggs was a bugger to start and I am fed up with it. With my wrist, arm, and shoulder problems I need something easier to start. When it Did start I used it a lot for duck hunting and it pushed that skiff through the slop I hunt in just fine.

My most common advice to guys who ask me about the longtails is to not expect the speed and quick maneuverability of an outboard but it will get you where you want to go. It takes some practice handling the motor when you get into the real loon slop and weeds. You will reach the point of needing the pushpole for sure, if nothing else, to get the boat turned around so you can run it out with the motor.

A lot of duck hunters ask me about them and you will find they are weight-conscious. Too much weight in the boat will bog it down for sure. I usually tell guys to step up on the hp rating of the motor if they plan on carrying a lot of weight. You may want to consider the same. Not sure of what you are planning on spending but you may want to to take a look at www.stump-jumper.com

Most longtails have a safety cut-off tether,,,use it!

Good luck!

That's what I use on my boat
Backwater made in Minn, close to Alexandria
back in the day it was only 100 muskrats to pay for it then.

a buddy has a wood duck and loves it for duck hunting. they attach to the transom mount with a pin. get a mount for each boat you have, then just pull the pin and transfer the motor from one boat to another. nice set up if you use different boats for bigger or smaller water. i think theyre still made in hutchinson. at one time they were behind on production, so order early if you decide to get one of these.

dustytinner you are right.
I have had a godevel, a twister and now a back water. If you call Backwater they have great service and will help you on what you need. Stern height, angle, shaft length, horse power.
Goes where an outboard wont, u-turns require picking up the bow and turning it around. Electric wench or hand wench really helps. No reverse, can be a issue.
If you can run an outboard then do, if not a long shaft is great

My SPS doesnt have reverse either, I hook a rope loop to the handle to keep the prop out of the water or shut it off and let the longtail (8') down into the mud to help anchor the boat while setting a trap. I have gotten use to it. I havent wanted to try a different drive train, and will probably buy another for a 14hp motor I have on hand and 48x16 Jon I have to play with.

I also think longshafts are better when breaking ice than outboards. With outboards it seems like the big floes get hung up on the shaft of the motor. With my 23hp longtail it just comes up on the flow and chews its way across. Not sure what the 6.5 will do in that situarion but I bet it will be fine.

If you are going to be shallow running heavily in sand plan on replacing props.

Oh ya!! I went through 2 props one duck season and the dealer asked me what the heck i was doing to them props? All i said was Trempealeau River. Oh was the response. Sand is hard on them and your pocket book! Lol

I bought their demo model and i put it through the wringer that 1st season to see what they were made of. You will have basic maintenance like oil, grease, maybe seals after time. I had mine redone last year (shaft end) and he asked if this was the same motor he sold me 20 years ago. Never had any engine troubles.

All I’ve ever had was a Go-Devil and never had an issue at all with it. I had mine on a fiberglass boat called a Dixon Classic. It’s almost like a beefed up smooth bottom skiff. Go anywhere type of boat, didn’t really even need water, just mud would work, lol. As others have stated, while saving for the motor, go ahead and save for a spare prop or two.

On my 14x36 I run a beaverdammudrunner kit 6.5hp predator cheapo from harbor freight. The reg longtail kits are 80inch shaft I had them make me one at 60in and glad I did. I stand on the seat to run (not recommended) but allows me to hold the tiller at a comfortable position when scooting down the river. Haven't trapped out of it but it would be the bees knees. Will scoot my lil 14ftr with fishing gear an two adults 13-14mph which is plenty for me. 7in aluminum props.....cheap to replace but don't last If in rocks. 3 pk was 22$ back when I stocked up
