Easy to remember regarding Snakes:
When the two colors touch...
Red & Black : Venom Lack
Red & Yellow: Kill a Fellow.

Not always true as there's aberrant color morphs and melanistic examples of both out there. Better option is to know the standard patterns plus physical body types of all.

I always stick with the triangle/arrowhead shaped head as an indicator of pit vipers... Doesn't apply to Corals, so if I'm unsure I stay clear.

You’d about have to stick a finger in front of a coral snake to get bit. They have fixed fangs and basically have to chew on you.

Most plain bellied, diamond back, northern water snakes have triangle heads also. Vertical slit pupils is the only clear way on “most” venomous. Coral snakes don’t have that, only pit vipers. I keep venomous here and they’re pretty neat animals. Here’s a pic of my girl “Darlene” named after the character from Ozark. [Linked Image]
