It reduces the number of outstanding shares, thus the value of each outstanding share increases. Corporate-owned shares do not receive dividends and are called capital stock. Future dividends are distributed over a fewer number of outstanding shares and normally the dividend increases. Buybacks are typically a sign of a healthy company.
