We picked up 20 of the little boogers a couple of weeks ago. I really like them too, not near as flighty as I thought they'd be, the bobwhites I had years ago were flightier than these guys (and gals I reckon). Ours are only about 4 weeks old and haven't started laying yet or getting aggressive and haven't heard any crowing. although I'm not sure what that sounds like from this type of bird, we have peacocks, turkeys (Narragansett) guineas, chickens (of course) and hear them all the time but these coturnix will be a new one. It'll be nice when they get going, thinking smoked quail should be real tasty

Also a Thanks You to KeithC for all of his info in the past ( I looked up the old threads on coturnix quail he posted) handy stuff to know, Thanks Again

Those are not quail. Walmart chinese knockoffs. Courtinex quail are far more efficient and there is no way american quail can compete. I will still stick with my wisconsin giants.

Slim chance of american quail released in the wild will make it. No chance of courtinex quail released will make it.
Was the largest breeder of flight conditioned bobwhite quail in the state for years. Conditioned flyers survival rate for American bobwhites is less than 10 percent. Cortenex quail is zero percent.

We plan on eating the eggs and also hatching them and raising them to butcher. I hope we like them. A lot of work to do all this then find out we don’t like the taste lol.

We got 6 eggs today! Happy with that since we only have 6 hens!

Used to be wild quail ( '60s) in New jersey and eastern Pa and even on Cap cod when I visited there in the '80s. But I have not even heard of quail in these areas since I have been back.......jk

They make dandy pickled eggs but are a pain to peel. Eggs are richer then chicken eggs but good flavor IMO.

Gary,

I did an experiment I called the "Urban Quail Project". The idea came from Gambrels running around my house while on a corporate stay in Tuscon. I purchased 25 quail, all very healthy and I raised them in a dog crate until their wings developed. I put the dog crate outside with a small fence around it so they could get used to being outside. After a week I opened the fence and off they went. They were great flyers and often would fly to the garage roof and sit on my wifes potting bench.

With all the cover in a urban environment such as shrubs and hostas they were doing well. At night some would sleep in the kennel again as I left the heat on. Others would group up and spend the night under the bushes around the house. I supplied them with grit, other than that they did well on insects, slugs and worms.

Yes house cats allowed to roam took some, then the big Iowa wind storm came and all cover was essentially lost in urban areas. However when the cover returns I will start another project this time with 50 birds.

I would encourage all folks in all mid northern towns, villages and cities to give it a try. Like I said Gambrel Quail thrive in AZ towns. No reason why Bobwhites would not do the same. Especially since people feed birds in town in winter and sparrows throw allot of millet and sunflower to the ground from those feeders. Again their enemy is urban cats, similarly Bobcats are a big threat to AZ Gambrels. But still Gambrels thrive!I am sure if enough Bobwhites are let loose they would also thrive after a few generations. Like I said their is plenty of cover in most mid northern urban villages and cities.

Gary as for your farmstead, Feral and Farm Cats would be you . Also hawks! But then hawks do get diseases and pass away when they are close to homes.
