You have a service business and the event and location is how you set your rate or fee. You get a call from a customer and after getting all the details you ask if they are ready for the rate?. They respond with, “If I needed to know that, I couldn’t afford to call you. Come do what you do, when you’re done tell me I owe you and I’ll pay you.”

Do you stick with your rate or take advantage of this opportunity?

Integrity. I would stick with my normal rate.

^^^^^^^Agreed. Also be careful. I’ve had situations like this where people are a little too full of themselves and when it comes time to bill they are not as rich as they think. I always make them review and agree to a quote before they can go on my work schedule.

May God bless you and yours

In business, reputation is huge. Always be ethical and above board. I would charge whatever my rate is.

I'd stick with rate.

Difficult customers simply never got an appointment again.

I never liked those customers. I never doubted that they had the money but I usually undercut my own prices because I didn't want to be perceived as taking advantage of the situation.

People with money didn't get it by not caring what things cost. People that like to act like they have money on the other hand....

Stick with your rate but have a signed quote with when and how payment is to be paid.

I'm guessing this will not be someone that's pleasant to do business with by the time it said and done. Just keep it in mind but reminds me of some of my former customers. I learned sometimes some customers are better to be someone else's customers.

Stick with your rate.

Give them a "not to exceed" price before so they know what the maximum cost might be so nobody is surprised. I just did this with a sheet metal fab shop that I've used a lot. I know them and trust them and have a pretty good idea on their pricing. I said "just do it". When it was done, the cost was 3x what I expected. I should have gotten a quote first because I wouldn't have done it at that price if I had known. My fault, not theirs.

I've never liked the open end blank check model of pricing. Whether that be an hourly rate, per tail or per visit.

Even though so of the jobs I quote have unknown factors that can increase my time or labor or greatly decrease that.

To many issues on the back end of those jobs getting paid or disagreement on actual work performed.

So I'm a flat rate based on information given. If in doubt I schedule a time to put my eyeballs on the job to provide a quote.

I only have one client that gets an hourly rate, as much to protect myself, and that is for my snake wrangling gig where they just want a wrangler on set. Some of those days and nights can run long, I've done 15 hours on set. But they know ahead of time that I'm XXX per hr with increases after 12 so final fee is up to them.

Most of my work is commercial and requires a quote from a set of plans and specifications. If that information changes or a differing site conditions occurs there is a change order written.

On residential Work I give a “ not to exceed” price unless the owner directs the work then it’s by the hour!

Stick with your normal rate,,but get a signed agreement before doing any work. Some folks with that attitude are big TALKERS but not big PAYERS.

I’d tell my rate regardless. That way there is NO misunderstanding when it comes time to collect. I’ve had folks tell me that before and I still go ahead and text/email them my rates and make sure they received it prior to starting.

I've found that with much of my word of mouth referrals I get the so and so told me to call you when can you be here calls that never ask how much. Either I'm being promoted as so good that price is no object or my prices are being reported as cheap. I ain't figured out which.

If your reputation is being fair then your going to eventually get all the work. Big difference between fair and the cheapest. People will pay more with a fair businessman! JMO and experience!

Absolutely fair as I can get. I try to put all options on the table including telling them how to do it themselves and let them make the call.

I'm not afraid of telling folks how to trap. They'll end up spending as much on gear as they would hiring the guy that knows how to use it. And hey if they do take up trapping that's one more in our camp. Win/Win
