Yellowhammer, state bird of Alabama.

During the war between the states in the Army of Tennessee a troop of fresh Alabama cavalry arrived in their brand new uniforms with the bright yellow piping of the cavalry on the uniform. Older veterans in their worn and faded uniforms jeered and called out Yellowhammer, Yellowhammer just look at those Yellowhammers. And that is how it spread army wide that Alabama troops became known as Yellowhammers and as point of pride Alabama troops of all branches took to wearing a small cockade of those feathers on their kepis.

The rest of the union calls them a Northern Flicker. No son of Alabama ever will, it's a flicker or yellowhammer.

Trust me. Every Alabama boy of my generation and older who could recite from memory the order of battle for Shiloh, Sharpsburg or Gettysburg knew and had his very own yellowhammer feather.

Definitely flicker. We have a slightly different subspecies here, ours are identical except the what is bright yellow on yours is bright orange on ours.
