It would depend on what type of cod you are buying. Those are Pacific cod, I would bet. There are several types of cod sold in stores.

They like to call them ice Atlantic cod here and very popular for Friday night fish fry.

Thank You Marty for turning those. MJM, coulda used the help ! Slight difference in Atlantic vs Pacific cod and supposedly A are a bit better. I believe fillets in the store are 12-18 $ lb these days unless it’s old inventory. Every boat is different but for me if engine is running the fish go off the bite. Hence electric reels. When bite is on try to work fast and always leave one leader down or the fish will move away.

Kicker was when I got a message from the buyer that said “We can’t find anyone to help so you’re gonna have to pitch em all yourself as soon as you get in”. Fortunately one guy showed up

I never fished commercially, just sport/recreation and most of that was limited to Homer and Deep Creek. We'd anchor offshore and if the first fish pulled up was cod, we'd cut the line, pull the anchor and move. We were targeting halibut and considered cod a trash fish. I didn't know any better. I cut some big cod loose.

Was a time that was the general consensus. Used to joke and say Someday we’ll be trying to catch these.

We used to joke that halibut were stacked three deep across the floor of Cook Inlet. We never seemed to have a hard time hooking into fish of some sort.

I've paid to go on a cod charter here in Maine. Good size boat with a good number of people and I don't remember anyone landing a fish. I sure miss Alaska.

Kanaga cod. You should have went a little further out of the bay, they are bigger. I would have loved to have been there to help. I may make it up this summer.

Out of Homer. Kodiak is better in my opinion because of markets, available area to fish and always somewhere to hide near by, and importantly the smaller tides. When current runs hard fish hug the bottom and only bite bottom hook. Done it there quite a bit. Loved that I could come in to the dock any time day or night and a crew would jump down and offload.
