Man, I thought my local lumberyard had rough wood, lol! What type of wood, any treatment for below ground/ ground contact?
DaveP We've got barns around here that were built in the early 1900s that the cedar poles are still solid, this cedar last along while, I built a barn in 2006 and the poles look like they did when I put them in the ground, my granddad bought a farm in 1953 he said it was an old barn when he bought it and the poles are still very solid. Main thing is to not use cement. Red cedar? Got some I need to get rid of, may put them to use. Thanks

nate what are you going to use the barn for? I ask because I seen a fellow leave some of the limbs on his cedars to hang stuff on. looked pretty handy and it made the ole barn look pretty neat It's way cool to do,but it's somewhat of a chore,it looks easier than it is, at least for me it is. Thanks for the input.

Whats holding up your rafters? just those boards nailed to the sides of the uprights?or do you have a purlin running along on top of the uprights that cant see in pic?
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Nate, How very special. You are talented and do it like they used to. Yourself. Sure, a few Tman'ers may grab their clip boards and attempt to make sure it's up to their "code," but I just think it's very cool indeed sir. Thanks for sharing.
Blessings, Mark

Lot hard work there But got to ask did you get your measurement wrong and center pole not in the middle? Or is that just how you rafter a barn ? Not being critical because I certainly couldn’t attempt all that work. Just curious how the right side rafters will tie in to that pole ? No that wasn't planned but it's not a big deal, just a little more work, I didn't catch it but in a earlier pic.you can see at the bottom of that pole it made a bend/ offset, but not a big deal to me,all the weight is on the side walls.
