What is the cause and how do we prevent it from happening? Was told not to charge the batter right after ice fishing, wait several hours for the battery to warm up? That is all I know? Suggestions please ........jk

I take it you are talking phone batteries? I would guess 90+ % of the people on here are on phones, are they catching fire?

Uh are you setting your phone on the ice? It should be in your pocket inside your bibs on silent without vibrate all day. Why in the world would it need charging right away?
Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.

Yes sorry, ice auger batteries and portable ice depth finders. I have seen photos on internet about them burning and exploding and I dont need anymore problems than the ones I cause myself. They are amazingly light and almost twice the amp power of the older batteries. Do they last as long? How long have they been on the market? Considering getting one for depth finder also......jk

the risk is greatest while charging , better batteries have a thermal monitor typically a 4 pin connection Positive , negative and the temp sensor.
if your battery is very cold and the thermal protection doesn't detect the cells overheating because they have to overcome the cold first they are already burning before the sensor detects it.
let the bat warm to room temp then charge so the temp can be accurate
don't run batteries to zero then not charge , if they go below threshold they won't charge again.
do not attempt to charge damaged batteries
it is best to charge them while you are present and place charger away from combustibles
you can watch some videos about how Li ion batteries self destruct when punctured
yes there are some risks but they also work very well.
America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.
