I've had pickled herring, smoked herring, canned herring, and creamed herring. I enjoy them all, in small doses.
Just doing what I want now.

Is it similar to a sardine ? We braid and dry herring here in western alaska by the ton. Also make about 20 gallons of pickled herring and give away lots of it. Love herring its a great fish if you can figure out the bones.

Otter 3006, I'd just forget the herring and stick with the razor clams; yum!
And, Tatiana, "herring under a coat" is the main way I've had them, not particularly my favorite dish (is that the one that has the purple colored beet coating on top?) The recipe with the spices sounds good.

They are braided into strings by the gills with basket weaving grass to dry. My daughters grandma used to braid them and would give me a string of them. I always wanted to dip a braid in shellac and preserve it ,knowing it’s one of those skills that will be lost soon. But alas I love dried herring and always ate them dipped in seal oil like they were meant to be.
Thurman might have pics or google might. Ive said it before you should write a book! Heck other trappers have!

They're probably all long since sold but do you have any of those herring for sale?
