Friend of mine from Madison lost all the buildings on his farm but the house. Lots of OLD cottonwoods went down. Shame.

I think the nature of prairie storms is one reason why our cottonwoods don't have a long life span compared to some species in the eastern or western forests. I think the life span for cottonwoods in this region is typically listed at about 125 years, a 150 year cottonwood is uncommon, a 200 year old cottonwood extremely rare. In the eastern or western forested regions, 200 years is the minimum of being considered old growth...

Fire and wind are features of the prairie ecosystem. Changing nature sometimes comes up against obstacles.

Had our deciduous trees been fully leafed out, there would not be a standing tree for counties. Y’all need firewood, come get it!!!!

Derecho wind.-A violent prolonged wind event at the leading edge of a large curved storm front.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.
