This stuff is no joke! I must have got into some weed wacking… I know what it looks like after it flowers but this early in the spring I’m not sure what it looks like. It makes poison ivy rash seem like a minor tickle. I’ve been running scalding hot water over my arm and than dumping rubbing alcohol over it. Anyone else ever have the unfortunate experience?

Not that, a couple of boys I worked with at weed and pest brought some in to ID, they thought maybe it was hemp. Good thing they didn't smoke it.

I have a little hemlock that grows on the crick bank. 2 years sgo i had a cow that was insistent on eating it. She would eat her fill and go lay in the pasture with her eyes rolling back in her head barely breathing with slobber dripping everywhere day after day. She lived through it but i sold her she spent very little time nursing here calf. Similar to a human drug atic.

We had tons of it when we lived in IL. I walked through/reached through/was exposed to it constantly but never has a reaction.

You most likely have wild parsnip, not poison hemlock. Wild parsnip causes the exact symptoms you have.

Wild parsnip has gone from never seen to everywhere here in the last ten years. Giant hogweed is also on the rise

Hemlock. sumac, or parsnip have not bothered me yet but ivy sure does.
Many claim oak here but game comish says no. Plenty Va. creeper and ivy lurks in with that.

I guess I wouldn't know it if I saw it.

I make Sumac " Lemonaid " out of the Sumac berries.I also dye my traps with them and Black Walnuts.

There’s a difference between sumac and poison sumac, just as there is between oak and poison oak

I make sumac lemonade as well but I wouldn’t try it with poison sumac, but then again I know people here that make tea from poison ivy and drink it and claim that it makes them immune to it’s affecting them

Don’t know about that but would hate to try and find out I was wrong

A point of interest for us trappers:

The Malad river in Idaho was named because of poison parsnips. (malade -french for "sick") Apparently beaver are able to consume the root and stems and not get sick but the toxins are then found in high concentrations in their flesh. A HBC expedition led by Alexander Ross had about half the trappers fall sick with digestive trouble. They determined that all the sick trappers had eaten beaver while these that remained healthy had not. The final proof of what caused the sickness was more or less confirmed when a Paiute woman came into camp and was offered beaver meat to eat. She looked at the beaver and basically gave them the Paiute equivalent of the middle finger. She could tell by looking at the color of the flesh what the beaver had been eating.

Poison sumac is not very common,,but there is some here.It has whitish or gray berries.The Staghorn Sumac that most of us are familiar with,,,,,, with the red berrie clusters is not poison.
